ENGINEERING YOUR FUTURE 3 PP1: Discipline overview

Civil, Structural & Environmental PP2: Discipline overview Pair Exercise: Look around the classroom and try to identify items that you think were created by engineers. How have these objects changed or improved over time? Explain: Anywhere we look we can find engineering examples so it’s not surprising that engineers work in lots of different places. There are many different types of engineers and the variety of the job as an engineer is very exciting. We are now going to have a look together at different types of engineers. Civil, structural and environmental engineers design and construct the buildings and infrastructure that are essential to modern society. Biomedical engineers develop technologies and equipment to help save people’s lives and improve their health. Ask: Imagine you’re an engineer. What would your transport solution be for your nearest city? Useful: Refer to pages 22,23, 24 & 25 – Engineering your Future guidebook Civil, Structural & Environmental Biomedical

Biosystems, Agriculture & Food PP3: Discipline overview Explain: Engineering is a very diverse career with so many opportunities. Engineers create good food. Biosystems, Agriculture and Food Engineers design systems to deliver high quality, safe and economical food to consumers. Engineers help create the look. Chemical Engineers develop the industrial processes used to make every day products such as food, drink, drugs, cosmetics, plastics and electronics. Ask: What challenges do you think these type of engineers face? How would you solve them? Useful: Refer to pages 32, 33, 26 & 27 – Engineering your Future guidebook Biosystems, Agriculture & Food Chemical

Mechanical Electronic PP4: Discipline overview Explain Engineers help us get there. Mechanical Engineers use their problem-solving skills to design machines and technologies to improve our world. Engineers keep us connected. Electronic Engineers design and develop the electrical and electronic equipment we use every day, from mobile phones to microwaves. Useful: Refer to pages 20, 21, 30 & 31 – Engineering your Future guidebook Mechanical Electronic

Electrical Computer and Software PP5: Discipline overview Explain: Electrical Engineers harness the power of electricity to move the world around us. Computer and Software Engineers design and develop hardware, software and information systems for computers and mobile devices. Useful: Refer to pages 28, 29, 34 & 35 – Engineering your Future guidebook Electrical Computer and Software

Aeronautical Building Services PP6: Discipline overview Explain: Aeronautical Engineers design, make and test anything that travels through the air-from rockets to drones. Building Services Engineers bring life to buildings protecting the people who pass through and enhancing their experience of the structure. Useful: Refer to pages 36, 37, 38 & 39 – Engineering your Future guidebook Aeronautical Building Services

Insert other images here PP7: Discipline overview Explain Manufacturing and Industrial Engineers oversee the complex process of making things on a large scale. Note: There are several other types of engineering disciplines. Feed free to add to this slide or add additional slides about any other disciplines you wish to talk about. Ask: Which engineer is most interesting to you? What would you enjoy about being each type of engineer, and what wouldn’t you like? Useful: Refer to pages 40, 41, 42 & 43 – Engineering your Future guidebook Manufacturing & Industrial Other disciplines
