Peptic Ulcer
Depending on the location, there are different types of ulcers: Gastric ulcer: peptic ulcer that occurs in the stomach Duodenal ulcer: occurs in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) Esophageal ulcer: usually occurs in the lower part of the esophagus
Once believed to have been caused by lifestyle (diet, stress,etc.)
Actually caused by a bacteria H. pylori Bacteria lives and reproduces in the mucus layer that covers and protects the tissue that lines the stomach and intestine Causes inflammation of the lining and can lead to an ulcer

Treatment Antibiotics Acid blockers: reduce the amount of stomach acid and allow the tissue to heal H-2 Blocker (histamine blocker) Antacids: neutralize stomach acid Proton Pump Inhibitors: stop the production of acid
