The Purpose of Personal Hygiene To ensure the safety of the food you help make and the safety of the people who eat it.

Relating Personal Hygiene to You If you are sick If you have cuts or sores What you do before arriving at work When you get to work When you leave the production area

Hygiene - If You Are Sick With a serious illness Could have a contagious illness Spread to others Spread to food Should not come to work With a cold Take appropriate medication Come to work Advise supervisor of illness

Hygiene - If You Have Cuts or Sores Always show wound to your supervisor Open skin Must be covered appropriately before handling food May include: New tattoos Body piercings Cuts Sores

Hygiene - Before Arriving to Work Take a shower Put on clean clothes Shave or trim beard Pull hair back into pony tail or braid

Hygiene - Before Arriving to Work Trim, clean and file fingernails Remove fingernail polish or fake nails Remove makeup, including fake eyelashes Remove all jewelry

Hygiene – When You Get to Work Make sure your shoes are clean Put on hair net and beard net Go through boot wash Wash your hands thoroughly

Hygiene – When You Get to Work Put on clean uniform Go through the second boot wash Wash your hands again Put on gloves Sanitize your gloves

Hygiene – When You Leave the Production Area Remove uniform and place in “DIRTY” bin Do not take personal protective equipment (PPE) to restroom or outdoors Wash hands and put on clean uniform before returning to production area

Handwashing Activity

Personal Hygiene – Washing Hands 5 steps to proper hand washing Pre-rinse hands (with as warm as you can tolerate) Apply soap Scrub vigorously for at least 20 seconds (Make sure to get between fingers, around nails, wrists and thumbs) Rinse hands thoroughly Dry with paper towel

When Must You Wash Your Hands AND Change Your Gloves? After: Coughing or sneezing into your hand Touching or scratching your skin, hair, eyes or mouth Making adjustments to clothing, earplugs, hairnets, etc.. Using a Kleenex to wipe or blow your nose

When Must You Wash Your Hands AND Change Your Gloves? After: Eating, drinking or smoking Using the restroom Picking an item up off of the floor Handling brooms, boxes, labels, garbage, hoses, etc. Each absence from your workstation

When Must You Wash Your Hands AND Change Your Gloves? Before and after Handling raw meat Handling products containing allergens

Proper Hygiene - Gloves Some important notes about gloves: Not a substitute for clean hands Wash hands before wearing Change whenever a hole or tear appears Condensation can escape Remove only by hand washing sink

Proper Hygiene - Gloves More important notes about gloves: Throw away when leaving production area Replace with new pair when you return to production area Wash and sanitize frequently or change often

Hygiene – Personal Belongings Storage of personal belongings Leave in you locker Storage of lunches, snacks and beverages Store in coolers in designated areas in lunchroom

Final Thoughts It is up to you to ensure the safety of the foods you help produce Forming good personal hygiene habits Strengthens your food safety skills Sets a great example for fellow employees
