And of course TEACHER

The Tenets of Confucianism People should act with these things Ren: Goodness and Humanity Li: Propriety and Respect And these can only be achieved through education.

How Confucianism Has Affected Our World Confucius was the founder of the modern ideal that all people deserve an education and a chance to govern, not just the noble class. Confucius started the system of going to school throughout your childhood to prepare for a few tests that would determine your status and occupation for the rest of your life. Confucian started new ideas about what government should look like Bureaucracy – Trained civil service, or those that run the government. Confucianism was the official Chinese philosophy from 206 B.C.E. to 1912 C.E., and it is still considered the backbone of Chinese culture

Mid Assessment Convert modern situations into Confucius thought

Daoism

Daoism - 6th century B.C.E Laozi – Believed in natural harmony – follower of Confucius Dao – means The way Humans fail to follow the Dao, Argue about questions of right and wrong -These arguments are pointless His book Tao Te Ching or Dao De Jing (the way of virtue) is the second most translated book in history to the bible

Daoism The natural order is more important than the social order A universal force guides all things Government should do as little as possible Human beings should live simply and in harmony with nature

The Laozi, Dao De Jing The Dao never does anything, Yet through it all things are done If powerful men and women Could center themselves in it The whole world would be transformed By itself, in its natural rhymes. People would be content With their simple, everyday lives, in harmony, and free of desire When there is no desire, All things are at peace.

legalism Hanfeizi and Li Si founders Government should control ideas and actions, give great rewards for those that carry out duties, harsh punishment for disobedience. Stressed punishment more than rewards

Legalism Powerful government = key to restoring order Punishments are useful to maintain social order Thinkers should be controlled by the government

Qin Dynasty

Qin Dynasty Shi Huangdi – “first Emperor” –emperor of the Qin Dynasty Used legalism Autocracy – Government with unlimited power and uses it in an arbitrary matter Halted internal battles, crushed invaders, and expanded the size of China Murder hundreds of Confucian scholars and burned the “useless” Confucius books

The Long Wall before the Great wall of China Shi Huangdi forced peasants to build the wall there was a choose…. “build the wall or die.” Many died anyways because of harsh labor and even harsher winters Some scholars believe he had the wall built just to keep his army busy and at this time foreign invasion wouldn’t have happened His son was also ruthless, but wasn’t as good of a leader. Overthrown by army of peasants, one of those peasants was from the land of Han, and it gave way to the Han Dynasty.

Remember the importance of tombs for emperors in ancient China?

Terracotta army This pit was the size of two football fields with over 6,000 sculptures and was sealed to be water proof. Each warrior had individual characteristics Painted beautiful colors Different ranks of warriors Chariots Had sculptures of entertainers Ironically the metal weapons given to the sculptures of his army may have actually been the weapons used to kill him

Final Assessment Write a paragraph Do you consider Taoism and Confucianism religions or philosophies? Or make your own Laozi/Confucius thought a saying to live by… I will hang up the best one.
