Let’s do a PSA for Our PBL Public Service Announcements As Problem Based Learning

What is a PBL? Problem Based Learning What is the problem? Charities have seen their contributions go down, and they need to raise their visibility and the level of donations. How can they do this? PSA

PSA – Public service announcement What is a PSA? What is the purpose? What are some causes/groups that might have PSA’s?

Characteristics of (good) PSA’s are short (usually 90 seconds or less) present one single issue inform the viewer of key, relevant facts have a clear call to action (usually indicated through text on screen)

Characteristics cont’d might or might not include people might or might not use music sometimes use voice-overs sometimes use special effects (like black and white) aim to leave a lasting impact

All PSA’s Have some type of appeal like: Appeal to pity Appeal to fear Ethical appeal Emotional appeal Logical appeal

What do you use to persuade? Persuasion can be visually created through:  powerful images – video, photographs, artwork  expressions on people’s faces  use of color vs. black and white  use of celebrities  use of regular people  clear calls to action

Persuasion can be created through sound via: repetition humor imperative commands music to create tone silence
