Grievances Jackson had with the Bank 1. The Bank was a wealthy Institution run mostly by eastern bankers that was not controlled by “the common man.” 2. The Bank held federal money and controlled the nation’s money supply. This harmed many poor western farmers who could not get money for land.

Nicholas Biddle President of the Second Bank of the U.S. A rich, wealthy, member of a banking family who opposed Andrew Jackson.

Clay and Webster plan for combat Clay and Webster wanted Biddle to apply for a new charter for the bank in order to defeat Jackson in the 1832 election.

The battle over the Bank and the election of 1832 Webster and Clay wanted to prove that the bank had popular support but Jackson and his supporters won the election and shut down the bank.

Political cartoon of Jackson Era

How the panic of 1837 and the end of the Second Bank are connected Small banks were flooded with worthless federal and state money after the National Bank closed causing an economic depression(the Panic of 1837). Jackson and his successor, Martin Van Buren, believed that the federal government should not get involved in the economic affairs of the country and refused to help the farmers and businessmen who had lost their jobs.

Van Buren economic achievement Believed in Laissez-faire economics- A belief that the government should not get involved in economic affairs. In 1840 he created the Federal Treasury.

Opinion piece on Jackson and the twenty dollar bill. Basics: You have been contacted by a survey company that wants to know if Jackson should remain on the twenty dollar bill due to his failed economic policies? In one paragraph defend a position on Jackson’s image on the twenty dollar bill, either A) Jackson should stay on the twenty dollar bill, or B) he should be removed. Defend your position with two facts from the notes we took today on the success or failure of Jackson’s banking policy depending on your view. Looking for: 1 claim about Jackson’s depiction on the twenty. Two facts on the notes. You will be asked to share your response with the class. Hand your paragraph in at the end of the period. You have twelve minutes to complete this task independently and quietly.
