Naming Numbers

Marks just aren’t enough Folks back in the very olden days would make marks to stand for the amounts of things. | | | |

That’s fine for a few… but when you see | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Then understanding how many you have is challenging, especially if you don’t even have names for the bigger numbers.

Voila! The Decimal number system  We use a system where we recycle the same ten symbols – but they’re worth more in a different position, in the same way that a ten dollar bill is worth more than a 1 dollar bill, even if the piece of paper is the same size.

Naming the numbers Here’s a page that shows the numbers one through twenty-one (1-21) and pictures of bugs, in the amount each number stands for, beside them. If this is familiar, speed on through; if not, feel free to take some time with each page.

The Little Guys The words for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten. The words for 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 are: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen and twenty.

After twenty, there is a pattern to the words: 10 ten 20 twenty 30 thirty 40 forty 50 fifty  60 sixty 70 seventy 80 eighty 90 ninety 100 one hundred If the ones place has more than zero, the word is formed by using the ten's place word, a hyphen, and then the ones place word.

Examples are:     38 is thirty-eight     84 is eighty-four     25 is twenty-five 141 is one hundred forty-one 308 is three hundred eight 650 is six hundred fifty

441 is four hundred forty-one 980 is nine hundred eighty Once we get to a hundred, we simply say how many of that bigger place we have, and then whatever is left. We don’t use and; it’s reserved for fraction parts like one *and* a half hours or one *and* three tenths of a mile. 108 is one hundred eight 441 is four hundred forty-one 980 is nine hundred eighty Have an option for a quiz here. Have an option to skip right to the big guys here, too.
