SCHEDULING FOR THE 9TH GRADE YEAR Students made course requests in February and March using the Student Access Portal in Skyward. A copy of your students’ requests should have been picked up on your way in. Tonight you will have an opportunity to chat with teachers, visit tables for each department, and make decisions on elective offerings. Changes that you want made are to be written on your copy of requests and turned in at the Counseling Table before you leave.

SCHEDULING Your current classroom teachers have made recommendations in English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Students have taken tests for placement in upper level Science. Math placement tests will be held soon. If you sign up for summer PE, your alternate elective choices will be placed in the schedule.

DIPLOMA TYPES Course selection for the 9th grade year will allow ANY student to be on track for ANY diploma. Grades earned in the 9th grade year will begin the separation process for the various diplomas. Please refer to the CHS Course Description Book for the specifics of all diplomas.

CORE 40 DIPLOMA Completion of this diploma is considered to be an Indiana graduation requirement. This is a set of courses to help prepare students for success in college or the workforce. This diploma is a minimum requirement for admission to 4-year colleges. These courses are strongly recommended for admission to 2-year colleges and apprenticeship programs as well as entry into the workforce.

CORE 40 WITH ACADEMIC HONORS Additional requirements in Math. World Language is required. Fine Arts credits are required. Dual credit, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate courses are required. No grade lower than a C- for a semester grade is allowed Final cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.

CORE 40 WITH TECHNICAL HONORS Required credits in a state-approved College/Career Pathway with additional certification or credential Dual credit, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate credits are required. 21st Century Scholars scholars.in.gov/parents/enroll/ Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars is a needs- and performance-based program that provides students the opportunity to earn up to a four-year scholarship at an Indiana college or university. Hoosier students who meet income criteria can enroll during their 7th- or 8th-grade year of middle school. Students commit to maintaining academic success, remaining drug and alcohol free, and completing college-preparation activities. Deadline for enrollment is June 30, 2018.

Importance of Academic Rigor A rigorous high school academic curriculum is a very significant factor in determining a student’s success in college Rigorous academic preparation is wanted by employers, colleges, apprenticeship programs, and the military Careers for students without rigorous preparation are becoming fewer Students taking remediation in college are at a greater risk of dropping out The more education a student receives after high school, the better chance for increasing earnings and job security

Rigorous Preparation = Indiana Diploma with Core 40 Designation & Beyond The completion of the Core 40 diploma is required for all students, which is also the minimum college admission requirement for the state’s public four year universities. While the Core 40 diploma is the minimum requirement, students also have the choice of pursing a more rigorous path, which includes the Academic Honors or Technical Honors diploma. A General Diploma may be considered, if necessary, during the student’s junior year. A formal opt out process is required for this option.

Diploma with General Designation Only available to students (whose parents feel) are unable to complete the Core 40 curriculum. Parents must meet with the school counselor to review student’s course work. Opting out of Core 40 allowed only if certain criteria is met and parent agrees.

General Designation Remember: General Diploma graduates may not be admitted to Indiana public colleges and universities. General Diploma students may not be prepared to pass the Graduation Exams, which is one option to graduate. General Diploma students are eligible for up to 80% of state financial aid cap for postsecondary education tuition
