Notion of an Internet Protocol How is it possible to send bits across incompatible LANs and WANs? Solution: protocol software running on each host and router smooths out differences between different networks Implements an internet protocol (i.e., set of rules) that governs how hosts and routers should cooperate when they transfer data from network to network TCP/IP is protocol (family) for global IP Internet

What Does an Internet Protocol Do? Provides naming scheme Defines uniform format for host addresses Each host (and router) is assigned at least one internet address that uniquely identifies it Provides delivery mechanism An internet protocol defines a standard transfer unit (packet) Packet consists of header and payload Header: contains info such as packet size, source and destination addresses Payload: contains data bits sent from source host Encapsulation - key to network messages

But… How do routers know where to forward frames? How do routers learn when the network topology changes? That’s what routing protocol does…

Routing Goal: determine “good” path (sequence of routers) through network from source to destination “good path” Typically means minimum cost path Other definitions also possible 2018/11/12

Dynamic Routing IP traffic can be very bursty Dynamic adjustments in routing typically operate more slowly than fluctuations in traffic load Dynamically adapting routing to account for traffic load can lead to wild, unstable oscillations of routing system Usually, IP routing protocols do not dynamically route around network congestion. 2018/11/12

The cost of the link F-C is 1, but the link goes down and the cost becomes infinity. With poison reverse, A and F change the cost to C to be infinity. But A find B also has a path to D with cost 9, and D doesn’t route to C via A, but B. So A consider it find a better router, and change the cost to be 13, it doesn’t know that the path from D to C also pass F-C. So the process will count to infinity. A possible solution is to make “infinity” smaller, but what is upper bound on maximum path length? Should it be larger or smaller, this is a problem. Routing Information Protocol (RIP) Earliest IP routing protocol (1982 BSD) Current standard is version 2 (RFC 1723) Features Every link has cost 1 “Infinity” = 16 Limits to networks where everything reachable within 15 hops Sending Updates Every router listens for updates on UDP port 520 RIP message can contain entries for up to 25 table entries 2018/11/12

RIP Updates Initial Periodic Triggered When router first starts, asks for copy of table for every neighbor Uses it to iteratively generate own table Periodic Every 30 seconds, router sends copy of its table to each neighbor Neighbors use to iteratively update their tables Triggered When every entry changes, send copy of entry to neighbors Except for one causing update (split horizon rule) Neighbors use to update their tables 2018/11/12

RIP Staleness / Oscillation Control Small Infinity Count to infinity doesn’t take very long Route Timer Every route has timeout limit of 180 seconds Reached when haven’t received update from next hop for 6 periods If not updated, set to infinity Soft-state refresh  important concept!!! Behavior When router or link fails, can take minutes to stabilize 2018/11/12
