SC.7.E.6.1 Describe the layers of the solid Earth, including the lithosphere, the hot convecting mantle, and the dense metallic liquid and solid cores

What properties can be used to describe the layers of the Earth?

Which of these diagrams best models the layers of Earth?

lithosphere

mantle

core

You have been asked, by a publisher, to read and comment on Jules Verne’s science fiction novel, Journey to the center of the Earth. Believable science fiction takes a “nugget of truth” and then follows that thread to make it seem believable. Using your knowledge of the composition of the layers of the Earth, write a letter to Jules Verne to provide input about what parts of his story are believable and which parts are not believable. Supply evidence from your understanding of the layers of the Earth to support your comments. Be sure to include scientific vocabulary in your letter.

Label each layer with its name Construct a model of the layers of the Earth using materials of your choice Clay Crayons/markers Styrofoam Other? Label each layer with its name Put the layers in the correct relative order Make the layers the correct relative thickness Include descriptions of each layer which include Composition Temperature State of matter
