The earth’s insides are comprised of both solids and liquids, depending on what layer you are in. Each layer has a different composition and thickness.

The Crust (or Lithosphere) Between 60 to 200 KM thick The crust is not one big shell, it is divided into plates All of these plates float on top of the layer just beneath the crust, known as the asthenosphere (or upper mantle) Which is made up of molten lava Think of each plate like a giant boat floating in the water 7 Major plates, with dozens of subdivided smaller plates

Upper Mantle or Asthenosphere The boundary between the crust (lithosphere) and the upper mantle (asthenosphere) is known as the Mohorovicic Discontinuity (MOHO). This is because of the change in density About 75 to 250 KM below the earth’s surface The layer of magma that the plates float on Very goopy layer that is similar to melted plastic Between 900 and 1600 ⁰C

Lower Mantle 700 to 2900km underneath the earth’s surface 500km gap between asthenosphere and lower mantle. Known as the transition zone (not important) Solid rock Pretty warm: 1600-4000 ⁰ C Guessing game for what it is made of Scientists use remains from volcanic eruptions to determine its components

Outer Core & Inner Core Fascinating! Outer Core 2900 to 5270 KM underneath the earth’s surface 4000 to 5000 ⁰C Liquid Inner Core Solid 5270 to 6370 KM underneath the earth’s surface 5400⁰C give or take This is the same temperature as the surface of the sun..
