Colonial Response: Stamp Act Congress Formed official protest against new British taxation.  It was the first gathering of elected representatives from the American colonies to from a protest

Colonial Response: Virginia Resolves (1765) Formal responses created by the House of Burgesses in reaction to the Stamp Act Asked Britain to repeal Stamp Act

Colonial Response Many colonists would harass tax collectors which made collecting the taxes for the British very difficult and inefficient

Declaratory Act (1766) Repealed the Stamp Act Justified Britain’s ability to tax the American colonists

Colonial Response Colonists felt that Britain didn’t have the right to continue to tax Americans Felt that more unjustified acts were upcoming

Townshend Acts (1767) Placed tax on paper, glass, paint, and tea British wanted to raise revenue in the colonies to pay the salaries of governors and judges so that they would remain loyal to Great Britain Punished New York for not obeying the Quartering Act

Colonial Response Colonists extremely angered Protesting took place Britain sent troops to Boston which eventually led to the Boston Massacre
