Welcome to Priory Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition evening

Priory DofE Firstly just a reminder about the initial 3 sections that should be well underway by this point (obviously we are focusing on exam first and foremost). Physical Volunteering Skill Any help you need please come and speak to any of us as there are plenty of ideas that qualify.

The Expeditions You should have had a letter that was sent via pupils that stated what date your child was doing their practice expedition and their qualifying expedition. Dates are as follows: Practice expedition – 29/6/18 – 1/7/18 Qualifying expedition – 5/7/18 – 8/7/18

Practice Expedition 29/6/18 – 1/7/18 Camp 2 IOW Circuit End From here Camp 1

Practice Expeditions 29/6/18 – 1/7/18 This is going to putting the map skills that they learnt in training sessions into practice. Day 1 on the practice expedition, groups will be walking with a leader at all times however the leader is only going to be there for safety. Navigation will be the sole responsibility of the pupils.

Practice Expeditions 29/6/18 – 1/7/18 Day 2 and 3 leaders will be walking with their groups for some of the route and then the groups will be on their own and meet their leader further along the route.

Ferry Crossing Unfortunately we are unable to cover the cost of the Ferry there and back. Pupils will need to come on the morning with their own money. The ferry is £13.20 each way. Pupils will also need to take the foot ferry from Cowes to East Cowes. This costs £1.50 for foot passengers. The School minibus will be being taken over on the car ferry and will be meeting the groups at certain checkpoints.

Practice Expedition Itinerary Time (Approx) Action 7:30 Meet at Portsmouth Harbour station (just outside the entrance on the Hard) 8:00 Depart for Ryde (expedition start point) with kit and pupils 8:30 Arrive at Ryde, final briefing, set off groups at 10 minute intervals. 12:30 – 13:00 Lunch Stop 16:00 First group reaches Sandown Campsite (Old Barn Touring Park) 16:00 – 17:30 Groups arrive at Sandown Campsite and start setting up their tents. Group leaders may facilitate activities and wide games here. Groups may choose to have their own entertainment 17:30 Groups cook their dinner 21:00 Groups head to bed 22:00 Lights out 7:00 Wake up for Day 2 Cook and eat breakfast for the second day Pack up and set off Groups reach Second Campsite (Comforts Farm) (See aforementioned schedule) 17:00 Pupils arrive back in Ryde and take the Ferry back the Portsmouth. 17:30 – 18:00 Pupils picked up at Portsmouth harbour station.

Mobile Phones It is worth nothing that times can change as a result of unforeseeable circumstances such as ferry delays. In this case we will advise pupils to contact you if and when. Pupil’s personal mobile phones will be allowed however they should not be used. We will supply a fully charged phone for use in emergencies.

Priory School Emergency Phone number 07494290004 This number will be programmed into the phones that each group will have

Meals For the practice and qualifying you are going to be cooking and preparing your own food for your group. It is essential that you let your group know about any allergies you may have (you should have done this in the first aid session) It is recommended that as a group sometime before the expedition that you go out and buy the food as a group yourself It is also worth buying high sugar snack foods for instant energy whilst on the expedition.

Emergency Procedures We have your medical form that you filled out and the medical history of pupils, if this has changed please make me aware at the end. At the end of the presentation, any medication details that require more information other than what the school already have please make me aware Medication will NOT be carried by members of staff. Epi-pens and inhalers will be carried by the pupils All staff and volunteers are first aid trained. If you have a personal first aid kit it might be worth bringing it just in case

Qualifying Expedition 5/7/18 – 8/7/18 Dorset Camp here 1 and 2 From here Finish Camp 3

The extra day As you have probably noticed the qualifying is an extra day. This is because Dorset is at least an hour and a half drive and to save us from a horrendously early start, we have decided to head to the campsite the night before. That evening we may head into Swanage for Fish and Chips as it technically is not part of the expedition. To be decided!

After the Expedition Pupils will need to log into their Edofe account and update the information on their expedition.

Any Questions?
