English revision strategies Parental engagement evening 2018

Knowledge Organisers Help students organise their knowledge and understanding in a structured way, under certain headings to categorise their learning Helps students to see where they have a lot of knowledge and not a lot of knowledge and thus allows them to identify areas for further revision They can be used for any subject/topic We have pre-prepared templates but they can make their own Some are already filled in if you ‘Google’ them – these can also be helpful

AIC Knowledge Organiser Language Word bank Character: Mr Birling Key points about the character Key Quotations Context Themes Form and Dramatic devices

Revision packs At the back of every revision guide are a range of questions to plan and answer. Students have also been given packs of potential questions and poems with clear links to support their revision. By working through these booklets, students will be revising the key skills, themes and contexts needed for their Language and Literature exams.

Essay planning Planning for potential essays is a really useful way of revising points, quotes and themes. Planning trains the brain to deal with and organise the information needed for an exam, so that students can write in a logical manner. We want to encourage students to pick apart questions, ‘splurge’ their ideas and then sort them logically so that they have a clear structure to their ideas. A lack of planning can often inhibit students achieving the higher levels. Writing in a “thoughtful” manner allows students to move up the mark scheme.

Cue cards Cue cards are a quick and useful strategy to gather ideas before the exam. We recommend writing out the requirements for each question onto a cue card so that these can be accessed before the exam as a reminder of what is needed.
