Manchester Airport -sustainable development plan – Surface access Andy Saunders Surface Access Strategy Manager

Sustainable development plan

Surface access This is key to everything that we do at Manchester Airport. In order for the airport to grow and prosper the transport network to / from the airport must be: Efficient Convenient Safe Reliable

Travel modes to the airport

What time do passengers arrive?

Current modal share

Future expansion Targetting 45M passengers – with 40% increase in staff Plus Airport city development Kiss & Fly / Taxi – needs to be managed and reduced

catchment area

The station / ground transport interchange Rail Tram (Metrolink) Bus Coach Access to airport terminals and offices by Skylink walkways.

rail 4 platforms - 15 minutes into city centre Direct services to major cities in the north of England Connections through Manchester Piccadilly to other destinations

Rail network

Rail network The network map shows clearly the imbalance in geographical coverage of the rail services. Connections to Liverpool and Warrington do not currently provide a frequent enough service. Services to major conurbations to the south are infrequent and indirect. Similarly, services to Chester / Wrexham and through North Wales are piecemeal. The rail services to / from the Airport really need to have extended hours of operation.

HIGH SPEED RAIL – hs2

Potential new Coach links

metrolink Line to Airport opened in December 2014 Links city centre via suburbs – commuter route for airport staff 10% increase in patronage on this line over the last 12 months

Bus links

Bus links

Staff – options for sustainable travel Discounted rail travel to the airport station Discounted travel on Metrolink to the airport Cycle to work scheme

ROAD ACCESS Traffic congestion is causing delays for passengers and staff ‘Do-Nothing’ isn’t an option

WHAT CHANGES ARE POSSIBLE Enhanced rail services along existing corridors, with extended hours of operation New medium / long distance coach services Remote ”park & ride” located away from the airport itself How to discourage “kiss & fly”
