Since the Southern colonies had a warm climate and fertile soil year round, they were able to plant cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo all year. Many were farmers because of this (“The Colonial Greenhouse”). Slaves were mistreated and put into tight, filthy spaces, little air supply. Many died or committed suicide, family members were separated. The Middle Colonies had good soil for farming cash crops such as wheat, oats, barley (“The Colonial Breadbasket”). Many were farmers or merchants who worked at port cities like Philly and NYC. Pennsylvania was created to be a safe place for Quakers who were persecuted in England to practice their religion freely. The Middle Colonies were much more diverse and tolerant than the other colonies were.
