Since the Southern colonies had a warm climate and fertile soil year round, they were able to plant cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo all year. Many were farmers because of this (“The Colonial Greenhouse”). Slaves were mistreated and put into tight, filthy spaces, little air supply. Many died or committed suicide, family members were separated. The Middle Colonies had good soil for farming cash crops such as wheat, oats, barley (“The Colonial Breadbasket”). Many were farmers or merchants who worked at port cities like Philly and NYC. Pennsylvania was created to be a safe place for Quakers who were persecuted in England to practice their religion freely. The Middle Colonies were much more diverse and tolerant than the other colonies were.

Are you ready to watch?!

The mistreatment of certain people because of their beliefs Persecution The mistreatment of certain people because of their beliefs

Life on the Mayflower Would you go?

Why were the Pilgrims referred to as Separatists? They wanted to separate from the Church of England

Oceanus Hopkins, 1620 - c. 1623

To create fair and equal laws To obey the laws that they created Why did the Pilgrims have to create the Mayflower Compact? Their royal charter did not apply to the Plymouth area where they landed, so they needed to create their own government. What type of government did the Mayflower Compact set up? A REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT!! (of course!) Two promises that signers made about their colony? To create fair and equal laws To obey the laws that they created

How did Native Americans help the Pilgrims to survive? Natives like Squanto taught the Pilgrims to farm rocky soil, to fish, and to use their land. The natives and the English also signed a peace treaty to protect each other.
