Ch:9 ISO 9000-14001 And Total Quality: The relationship

Chapter outline 1- Define ISO 9000 2- Understand eight principles of ISO 9000 and it’s objectives 3- Define ISO 14000 4- Scope of ISO 14000 5- Differences between ISO 9000 and ISO 14000

ISO 9000 Quality Management system a definition: ISO: International Organization for standardization ISO 9000 is a set of international standards on quality management and quality assurance developed to help companies effectively document the quality system elements to be implemented to maintain an efficient quality system. They are not specific to any one industry and can be applied to organizations of any size. ISO 9000 can help a company satisfy its customers, meet regulatory requirements, and achieve continual improvement. However, it should be considered to be a first step, the base level of a quality system, not a complete guarantee of quality.

The Eight Principles of ISO 9000 1 Customer focus 2 Leadership 3 Involvement of people 4 Process approach 5 System approach to management 6 Continuous improvement 7 Factual approach to decision making 8 Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

ISO 9000 Objectives Five Objectives of ISO 9000  Gives businesses with useful, globally recognized models for operating a quality management system. Achieve, maintain and aim to regularly enhance product quality (the standards define “product” as the output of any process. Therefore, this word will also apply to “services,” whether internal or external to the business). Primary objective of getting these standards is to boost the goodwill of organization. Customer can compare the quality of two companies , one is with ISO standard and other is without ISO standard . Goodwill could be in form of rise in sale or more promotion of product of company. To create a compliance standard which is followed 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a week, 52 weeks-a-year. Offer confidence to internal management as well as other workers that requirements for quality are being fulfilled and maintained, and that quality improvement is taking place.

Comparative scope of ISO 9000 and Total Quality Management ISO 9000 and TQM are not interchangeable ISO 9000 is compatible with and can be viewed as a subset of TQM. ISO 9000 is frequently implemented in a non-TQM environment ISO 9000 can improve operations ibn a traditional environment ISO 9000 may be redundant in a mature TQM environment ISO 9000 and TQM are not in competition. See page no. 340

ISO 14000 Introduction The ISO 14000 series of environmental management standards are intended to assist organizations manage the environmental effect of their business practices. The ISO 14000 series is similar to the ISO 9000 series published in 1987.

ISO 14000 - Scope The ISO 14000 family of standards provides practical tools for companies and organizations of all kinds looking to manage their environmental responsibilities. ISO 14001:2015 and its supporting standards such as ISO 14006:2011 focus on environmental systems to achieve this. The other standards in the family focus on specific approaches such as audits, communications, labelling and life cycle analysis, as well as environmental challenges such as climate change.
