Responsibilities of Coaches and Mentors When in a position of leadership People look up to us. Listen, and pay attention. Genuinely attempt to understand what others want and need.

Responsibilities of Coaches and Mentors Convey values through actions. Willing to live by the standards they expect others to uphold.

Responsibilities of Coaches and Mentors Listening > key skill of good leadership. Honest listening Key trait of successful coaches and mentors. Leadership awareness Invest energy in assessing the situation. Figure out what is needed and how to fulfill it.

Coach≠Mentor

Coach - Attributes Develop skills and capabilities in others. Can be another Scout or a leader. Coaching > leadership behavior, a skill. Forms Discussion, lecture, critique, or guided practice. Key concept > letting go and enable. Coach may become a mentor > a team resource.

Mentoring

Mentor - Attributes Experienced Scout or leader Becomes a trusted guide and counselor of a less experienced individual. May be assigned but often natural. Leadership skill required for adults when dealing with adults.

What Coaches Do Provide Build team and individual capabilities. task direction, vision, skill instruction and resources. Build team and individual capabilities. Facilitate external relationships. Transfer responsibility for success. Support growth and progress.

Planning Ahead

What Mentors Do Advise, support and provide guidance. Unit environment and culture. Instill attitudes, social intelligence and values in Scouting. Aid to retain mentored individuals. Provide trusted counsel, perspective.

Good Coach Tips Listen. Supply energy. Provide focus and information. Influence, don't control. Recognize Success and what is right vs. what is wrong. Value differences, evolve and grow.

Good Mentor Tips Safe and nonthreatening environment > allow difficult or sensitive questions. Build trust early. Be good listener. Share personal experiences. Ask leading questions when pertinent. Compliment when earned.

Coaching and Mentoring Aspect Coaching Mentoring Goals To correct inappropriate behavior, improve performance and impart skills as an individual accepts a new responsibility. To support and guide the personal growth of the mentee. Initiative The coach directs the learning and instruction. The mentee is in charge of his or her learning. Focus Immediate problems and learning opportunities. Long-term personal development. Roles Heavy on telling with appropriate feedback. Heavy on listening, providing a role model, and making suggestions and connections.
