The Message of the OT Without the Old Testament we don’t properly understand God. – Philip Yancey Apart from the Old Testament we always have an impoverished view of God. – Leslie Allen If the center point of the NT is the promise of the kingdom that is coming, the center point of the OT is the kingdom that it is here.
The Message of the OT 17 “Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:17-19
The Message of the OT 37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and most important command. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.” – Matthew 22:36-40
The Message of the OT The most persistent and impactful character in the OT is The LORD, who goes by many names. The OT, first and foremost, reveals him in relationship to the world and his people. The OT is not ultimately about principles and practices The OT sets the framework for the personal reality of God.
The Message of the OT The Father Jesus points us to is none other than The LORD of the OT. The LORD is our Father and our Father’s character is revealed powerfully through the actions and commitments of The LORD in the OT.
