Make a t-chart in your notebook (unit content) Acculturation Assimilation Def. Similarities Differences Ex’s

Acculturation When one group of people adopt the culture traits of another culture Also, a merging of cultures as a result of prolonged contact

Assimilation the process whereby a minority group gradually adopts the customs and attitudes of the prevailing culture to fully become part of a different society, country, etc.

Examples The Amish are assimilated because their loyalty is to the United States, but they are not acculturated because they have their own life style and dress based on their religion. The 9/11 terrorists were acculturated in American society because they adopted the current fashions, slang, customs (barbecue), etc., but they were not assimilated because their loyalty was to the Taliban.

Why might this be difficult? Closing video:

Discussion: How have immigrants assimilated throughout history? A story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGCs2LHPtXM
