Student lens: Self-discovery If you won’t teach me, who will Student lens: Self-discovery If you won’t teach me, who will? Invest in me, I will help you I don’t just want to earn money Where do I fit in? Why am I doing this? Holistic development & emotional intelligence KC

Administrator lens: Campus employment as win-win Administrator lens: Campus employment as win-win. Consider organizational location & structure. Leverage your career development team. Create centralized supports for students. Invest resources in supervisor training & support. MS: Administrators need to find ways to improve student engagement, learning, and well being outside of the classroom. Campus jobs present just that opportunity. Org location – ask them where it sits? Is that the best place? (career? Fin aid? Student affairs centralized?) Regardless of where it sits, the career center staff coaches employers on how to develop meaning internships – they can do similar for campus. Ask them about their investment in supervisor training & support (who’s already doing this well – eg Res Life, Leadership, etc.). Give examples of centralized training (topics: workplace etiquette, communication skills, telephone skills, reception skills, customer service skills, career competencies and methods: case studies, ethical dilemmas, think-pair-share strategies)

MS Stony Brook University – training available in person, live webinars, and recorded tutorials. Digital Badging for Career Competencies (based on NACE) University of Iowa- GROW program (Guided Reflection on Work) 100 schools Carnegie Mellon University – position classification system for student positions George Washington University – SEEP Student Employee Excellence Program (training) DePaul University – Ladders of employment

High-Impact Practice Intellectual Work (Pusser) Principles of Good Practice (Chickering & Gamson) Effective Educational Practices (Kuh, Kinzie, Schuh, & Whitt) “Hybrids are hot” (Barr & McClellan) GSM: Unsure if this should go at the beginning with George or later?
