Correctly Citing Textual Evidence

NEVER use the word “quote” in the introduction or explanation of a quote in your essay Ex: This quote means… What this quote says is… Never Use “quote”

Proper Quote Format “Quote from book” (author’s name 42) . Period put after the parentheses, never inside the quotations Keep exclamation points or question marks Must mix the quote with your own words Use proper punctuation around quote Ex: Abigail shows her indifference when she says, “I am completely indifferent” (Miller 22). Proper Quote Format

This is clearly shown when Proctor says, “Because it is my name This is clearly shown when Proctor says, “Because it is my name!” (Miller 143). Proctor’s change is complete when he says, “I do think I see some shred goodness in John Proctor” (Miller 144). “Because it is my name” (Miller 143) shows Proctor’s transformation at the end of the play. Proper Quote Format

You only put the part of the quote that you need in your paper You only put the part of the quote that you need in your paper. There is no need to write long quotations. If you need to cut out a middle you three periods in a row to indicate this. BUT ONLY THE MIDDLE, NOT THE BEGINNING OR END. Example: Hale’s concern is apparent when he says, “Woman, plead with him…What profit him to bleed?” (Miller 145). Proper Quote Format
