Unit 1: Promoting quality care Effects of attitude and prejudice on health and well being.

The need to give and receive attention. As you have seen human beings have a number of basic needs which must be met. The need to give and receive attention. The need to take care of the body The need for stimulation and challenge The need for meaning and purpose Health & well being is maintained when individuals meet their physical, social and intellectual needs. When these needs are unmet it can affect the health and well being of the individual, causing harm.

Learning objectives. To understand the basic needs of a human being To recognise, discuss and explain individual differences Describe types of discriminatory practices. To understand the term discrimination & distinguish between direct and indirect discrimination.

By the end of the session You must be able to Describe the 4 basic needs of a human being Define discrimination and explain the difference between direct and indirect discrimination Explain 8 discriminatory practices. Explain how individual differences effect discrimination You Should be able to Provide appropriate examples of how people can be discriminated against because of their differences. You Could be able to Provide full and comprehensive explanations for your answers, using a variety of examples.

Discrimination can affect peoples health and well being. Attitudes and prejudice can have an effect on the health and well being of service users. This effect can be damaging. We need to be aware of how people are discriminated against in order to understand how we can avoid doing the same in our working practices. Care workers need to understand discrimination in order to employ anti-discriminatory practices in their own work

What is discrimination? When prejudiced attitudes effect the way individuals behave towards other people. It mean to show preference for. Gidden (2001) described it as ‘activities or actions that deny to the members of the group resources or rewards which can be obtained by other’ Discrimination is caused by prejudice, but not all people who are prejudice will discriminate. To discriminate is to make a distinction between people on the basis of class or category without regard to individual merit. Examples include social, racial, religious, sexual, disability, ethnic and age-related discrimination

Direct discrimination Overt individuals openly discriminate against others. Occurs when it is obvious by words or actions of an individual that they are deliberately disadvantaging against another person. i.e. Within a care setting giving preferential treatment to some groups or denying treatment to some groups.

Indirect discrimination This is not as obvious (Covert) It is when certain conditions are in place that demonstrates a preference for some people over others. Rules and regulations make it impossible for a person belonging to a specific group fully participate in society. Difficult to prove, because it is not obvious that this is what is happening.

Types of discriminatory practices? There are 8 types, what are they? Discriminatory practices.

Types of discriminatory practices? Discriminatory practices. There are 8 types, what are they? Physically assaulting people who are different Making assumption about people, that everyone will respond in the same way Verbally abusing people who are different Discriminatory practices. Excluding people from activities Avoiding people because they are different Excluding people from opportunities Negative non verbal communication Devaluing people – treating needs and interests as being of less value than those of others.

Why do you think discrimination occurs?

Discrimination can occur because of individual differences between people. But what are these individual differences. Activity –You have 20 minutes. Everyone will be given an individual difference between people which may give rise to discrimination. You need to talk to you peers to find out what these are. Record this information onto a mind map. You need to provide examples of how these groups of people can be discriminated against.

Effects of attitudes and prejudice. Discrimination can lead to some people not having their needs met. They can damage a person physically and psychologically and can cause stress. It can prevent people gaining access to support, advice, services and financial aid that they need in order to maintain their health and well being. And in some cases can lead to abuse!!
