Electronics and Electricity: the Science Mrs. Barbour Exploring Technology
Standard 4 : Explore Energy and Power technologies in our world through activity-based education. Snap Circuits and Makey Makey activity
Key Words Slides 4-7 Protons, Neutrons, Electrons, Atomic Number
Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons
Why the numbers? Number at the top of the elements identify the amount of protons and electrons orbiting the nucleus (atomic number).
Practice for Science Tests, Benchmarks, EOG’s,etc.. How many protons and electrons (atomic number)? 29 Cu Copper 63.546 30 Zn Zinc 65.3 79 Au Gold 196.665 47 Ag Silver 107.8682 What is the atomic mass? 29 Cu Copper 63.546 30 Zn Zinc 65.3 79 Au Gold 196.665 47 Ag Silver 107.8682 ***If you can just remember the top number is the atomic number (amount of protons in the nucleus and electrons circling the nucleus), then the atomic mass is the bottom number***

Key Words Slides 10-15 Electrical Circuit, Negative Ion, Series Circuit, Parallel Circuit, Conductors, Insulators
Jumping Electrons Jumping of electrons from atom to atom creates a stream of electricity.
Negative Ions
An electrical circuit is any continuous path for electrons to flow away from a source of electrical potential (voltage) and back again. For a circuit to work: Complete circuit (no breaks in the path!). NO short circuit or NO open circuit. An electrical circuit is any continuous path for electrons to flow away from a source of electrical potential (voltage) and back again. A short circuit is a circuit having very little resistance, permitting large amounts of current. If a circuit becomes shorted, it means that a path for current formerly possessing substantial resistance has been bypassed by a path having negligible (almost zero) resistance. Conversely, an open circuit is one where there is a break preventing any current from going through at all.
Series vs. Parallel Circuits The current goes in one loop only. Parallel: The current splits into more than one direction. Discuss Xmas lights
To Conduct or Not? Non conducting metals
Insulators Insulators like plastic and rubber surround the metal wires and cables to prevent electricity from flowing through our body which is composed mostly of water, another good conductor.
