Modern Atom Model

Modern Atom Model In 1911 Ernest Rutherford determined that atoms were mostly empty space with negatively charged electrons orbiting a positively charged nucleus. 1932 James Chadwick included protons and neutrons within the nucleus.

Modern Atom Model The modern atom model includes: Nucleus Protons - Positively Charged particles Neutrons - Neutrally Charged particles (no charge) Electron Cloud Electrons- Negatively charged particles

Modern Atom Model Each type of atom or element has a unique number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. For example: Element Proton Neutron Electron Hydrogen 1 Helium 2 Lithium 3 4 Copper 29 35 Gold 79 118

Modern Atom Model Determining the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. And reading the periodic table. Atomic number - the number of protons Atomic mass - the number of protons and neutrons Electrons - for our class will be the same as the protons

Modern Atom Model Let’s Practice: Protons: _________ Protons: _________ Neutrons: ________ Neutrons: ________ Electrons: ________ Electrons: ________ Protons: _________ Protons: _________

Modern Atom Model The periodic table is ordered by atomic number and grouped into families of similar elements.

Modern Atom Model Snowflake atom activity instruction Gather materials: scissors, snowflake template, cardstock, glue, and colored pencils. Cut out the atom template. Determine the element. Glue the snowflake atom model to the card stock. Label and color the protons, neutrons, and electrons.
