Immigration and Customs Immigration = the process by which a government official controls the movement of people across its borders. Customs = the procedure by which government agents inspect luggage and other goods entering a country to check for forbidden or restricted items.

Currencies Each country prints its own money (currency). Each major unity of currency has a name. Units of currency are usually further subdivided into smaller units.

Predicting Expenses When Traveling Big, sophisticated cities are generally more expensive to visit than smaller or less visited ones. Rural or suburban areas tend to be less expensive than urban ones. Cities with many business travelers cost more than those that attract mostly leisure travelers. Developing countries have lower overall costs. It depends on the currency exchange rate.

Options for Exchanging Money Pay with cash in U.S. dollars Pay with cash in foreign currency Pay with your credit or debit card Pay with traveler’s checks

Ways to Minimize Health Risks When Traveling Get appropriate vaccinations Take precautions or know how to recover from: Jet lag Altitude sickness Motion sickness Local food and drink

Safety and Security Issues Check for official government assessments and warnings about the countries you’ll be visiting. Keep up to date on recent news in regions you’re thinking of visiting. Be alert and cautious. Go with brands you know. Be prepared for security checks. Keep up on restrictions.

Natural Disasters Be wary of seasons when weather is most likely to disrupt a trip. Earthquakes and tsunamis are rare but unpredictable. Volcanic eruptions are sometimes predictable.

Your Future in Travel Consider how your personality fits each industry sector. Visit employment sites and be alert to opportunities. Time your job quest to coincide with travel seasons. Be alert to what the economy is doing. Project professionalism. If you have a unique skill, mention it. Apply for an internship.

The Future More and more people will travel. New destinations will emerge. Special-interest travel will increase. Health-oriented travel will be very popular. Technology will enhance travel in ways we can’t imagine.
