Itinerary - Thursday 18 October Meet at Manchester Airport Terminal 1 no later than 16.30 (this is to give us plenty of time to get the entire group through all checks to airside) Depart Manchester Airport Terminal 1 on flight EZY1895 (easyjet) at 19.35 Arrive Berlin Schonefeld at 22.35. Coach transfer to accommodation. Straight to bed on arrival.

Itinerary – Friday 19 October Rise for breakfast at Hotel Schulz prior to heading out for a full day walking tour of the city. Using public transport as well as on foot we will take in diverse and inspiring sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the Eastside Gallery (remaining section of the wall), the Topography of Terror, the Holocaust Memorial. Lunch break Evening meal at hostel Visit to the Reichstag dome by night

Itinerary – Saturday 20 October Rise for breakfast at Hotel Schulz Leave accommodation using public transport to visit the House of the Wannsee Conference. Here we will have a guided tour of the house and take in the history of the events leading up to the ‘Final Solution’ Lunch Leave Wannsee using public transport to visit the Olympic Stadium for a guided tour. Return to accommodation for dinner Evening activities at the hotel

Itinerary – Sunday 21 October Rise for breakfast and pack cases ready to check out (baggage will be stored in a secure room) Head to the former Stasi prison for a guided tour Lunch Visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial site Return to hotel for evening meal Coach transfer to Berlin Schonefeld Airport Depart Berlin Schonefeld on EZY1898 at 21.30 Arrive at Manchester Terminal 1 at 22.40 to be collected by parents/carers

Hotel Schulz Brand new build designed with school groups in mind “Schulz Hotel is situated right in the center of happenings. Monuments and museums are reminding us on the eventful history of the German capital. The East Side Gallery, longest persevered section of the Berlin Wall, is located right next to us. With the train station Ostbahnhof practically at your doorstep, you can conviently reach places like Alexanderplatz or museum island, which is listed as UNESCO world heritage. Discover the nearby vibrant neighbourhoods Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg which offer lots of art and culture.” 

Rooming Pupils sleep in rooms or four in brand new ensuite rooms Pupils will be in same sex groups, and can decide who they want to share with – lunchtime meeting TBA! Staff will all be located on the same floor as students, and students will be clear as to where staff rooms are located.

Meals and food Hotel Schulz will provide breakfast and an evening meal, both of which are buffet style, so there will be some choice During the day pupils will be given an allowance to buy a picnic style lunch (sandwich/crisps/fruit). Bottles of water will also be distributed by staff

What to bring…

Hand luggage allowance One piece no bigger than 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm including the handle, pockets and wheels “You can take ONE cabin bag per person on board. That’s just enough space for a couple of nights away. There’s no weight limit but we do ask that you are able to lift it into the overhead locker.”

Clothing and equipment Normal day clothes (As we are going in October, there is a low risk of rain and it may be as low as 6 or as high as 13 Make sure you check the weather forecast before packing, but ensure you are prepared for a bit of everything!) Wear suitable clothes for lots of walking / being outside. Waterproof coat or anorak. It could be chilly! Pack layers, as can be hot too. Comfortable shoes and socks. This is VERY important!

Clothing and equipment Toiletries and towels – If fitting a towel in is difficult given that we are taking hand luggage, then a towel can be hired for Euro 1.50 per day (so Euro 4.50 for three days they’d need them) Toiletries – we need to be very careful with – please check out the guidance carefully, using this link here about what is and is not permitted. Clothing and equipment Mobile phones are allowed Laptops/Ipads/tablets/expensive phones should NOT be brought as they are NOT covered on the insurance Do not take valuables, such as jewellery! Notebook & pen Day bag – for when we are there NOTE –valuable items are brought at your own risk. Please check the insurance policy to see what is covered and the excess.

Mobile phones There is ‘free high speed’ wifi in the hotel but… Remember that being abroad is a chance to ‘switch off’ from what is going on at home and try to embrace being ‘disconnected’ for a weekend! Should you need to use your phone, you no longer pay additional roaming charges when in the EU. This means that phone calls, text messages (SMS) and using data services while abroad do not incure any extra cost. You pay exactly the same price for using these services when travelling in the EU as you would if you were at home. Your operator simply charges or takes your roaming consumption from the volumes in your domestic mobile tariff plan / bundle. We expect that during the day students will refrain from using mobile phones other than for taking photographs. We want students to be ‘in the moment’ so they can remember seeing/hearing/learning/smelling things, not just how they presented it on social media

Pocket money Pocket money should be changed into Euros before the trip. We suggest no more than €100. Students will be responsible for their own money at all times. A small amount of English money for the outward/inward journey. If any of the group budget remains at the end of the trip, we will distribute this to pupils to use in the airport unless you specify otherwise.

Behaviour and Safety

Behaviour In order that we may all enjoy the visit, we expect excellent behaviour at all times. Bedtimes must be observed – pupils must stay in their own rooms after ‘lights out’. Good manners on the journeys, on site and during our trips are essential. Unsociable behaviour will be dealt with severely. In extreme cases, parents may be asked to come and remove their child (this has never been needed before)

Pupils are forbidden to buy or take with them knives, alcohol, tobacco, fireworks, bangers or lighters. When the pupils are allowed time ‘on their own’ (at lunchtimes and at certain sites) they must stay in mixed groups of no less than three. Please sign a consent form for this. Pupils must listen carefully to all instructions – noting WHERE and WHEN they are to meet up. Keep an eye out for each other and tell a member of staff straightaway if any problems arise. Pupils will all be given a laminated card with the staff mobile phone number

If you’re in agreement, please don’t go without handing in the additional consent forms, with the number of your son/daughter’s mobile phone. This is only for use in an emergency. The list of numbers will be held by the leaders, and shredded after our return.

Health Please make sure that staff are informed of any medical or health conditions (old or new) Please inform us if anything at all changes between now and our departure. Please also let us know if your child comes into contact with any infectious diseases between now and our departure. Please inform us of ANY medication that will need to be taken whilst on the trip. Please include specific details on how and by whom this is administered. We will have paracetamol and ibuprofen for minor aches and pains which we can administer to students with parental consent. If you feel your son/daughter might need antihistamines / travel sickness medication, please provide this in the original packaging with the expiry date and recommended dosage clearly marked, labelled with your son/daughter’s full name and form group.

Health All students need to have a current EHIC European Health Insurance Card You can obtain one of these for free from the GOV.UK website. Click here. This card allows you to receive medical treatment in Europe free or at a reduced cost, if that treatment becomes necessary during your visit. EHIC cards will be kept by staff throughout the stay, and returned to students upon return to the UK. Please hand EHIC cards in to pupil services, in a clearly labelled envelope with your child’s full name and form group and ‘BERLIN TRIP’ by Friday 5th October at the latest!
