Topic 1: Religious Beliefs Values and Teachings Title: What are the six beliefs? LO: To express an understanding of the six beliefs. To explore what they are and where they come from. To evaluate where some potential problems may lie. Do Now: read the Hadith below. What are the six core beliefs of Islam? Umar ibn Khattab, relates in the Hadith: We were sitting in the company of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, when suddenly a man arrived. He was wearing clean, white clothes and his hair was jet black. He did not look as though he were a traveller and he was not known to any of us. He sat down close to the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his knees touching the knees of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He said: O Muhammad, tell me something about faith. The Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, replied: "Faith is that you should believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books and His Prophets; that you should believe in the Day of Judgment and that you should believe in the Divine Laws relating to good and evil." (Tirmidhi)

Activation: cut out and stick this section of the syllabus into your book. Make a note of anything underneath that you know already about Islamic Beliefs eg one angel is Jibril. Six Beliefs

The Six Beliefs can be grouped into three: Tawhid Allah Destiny (Al Qadr) (Oneness and uniqueness of Allah) Risalah Angels Books Messengers (Prophethood) Akhirah Day of Judgement Afterlife (Life After Death) Activation: How are all of these separate beliefs interlinked? Define Tawhid, Risalah and Akirah in your book.

Demonstration: Do a concept map..... Make links between the key terms which are linked to the six beliefs. Draw a line and over the line explain what the link is. E.g.. The link between Prophet Adam and Prophet Muhammad is that Adam was first whereas Muhammad is the seal (last).

Consolidation – Can you see any areas within the beliefs which may cause tensions amongst Muslims? For instance: Will all Muslims have respect for the Gospel of Jesus which comes under beliefs about Holy Books?
