What is Islam?

Islam is the Arabic word for “surrender.”

According to Muslims, Muhammad was a prophet who received the word of God.

Hijrah is the name of Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Medina in 622, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Muslims call their house of worship a Mosque.

The Five Pillars- Five important duties commanded by God   Shadahah – a statement, recited by Muslims, that states the fundamental beliefs of Islam Salah – daily prayers of Muslims, said five times a day Zakah – charity performed by Muslims Sawm – fasting (Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan) Hajj – a journey or pilgrimage to Mecca

Before entering the house of God, Muslims remove their shoes and wash (wudu) to show respect.

Muslims do not believe in worshipping idols, so there are no pictures or images of Muhammad inside a Mosque. Worshippers are separated by gender (men and women go to different sections of the Mosque).

The Qur’an is a book that contains the holy writings of Islam.

Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol. They do eat other kinds of meat. They also like to eat hummus and pita bread.

The Hadith is a written record of Muhammad’s sayings and actions.
