Speeches to Persuade

Word of the Day: by and large BYE und LAHRJ: adverb On the whole, in general Example: WO2 Bradford was, by and large, very annoyed with the new cadets when they forgot to call her ma’am.

Speeches to Persuade Purpose is to sway the audience to your point of view, to convince the audience of the rightness of your argument. Commonly used in debate. Two main methods to persuade: appealing to reason, and appealing to emotion

Appeal to Reason Logic Logical argument Rhetoric Speaker strives to inform, persuade or motivate a particular audience in a specific situation Scientific evidence – proof

Appeal to Emotion Advertising Faith Imagination Pity Propaganda Psychological manipulation Tradition

Tips and Trades Research your material completely and find evidence to support the points you are making. Rely on reason, rather than emotion alone to persuade your audience. Find authorities (experts) to help support your points. Concern should be on the truth. Avoid distortions, misquotations, evidence and quotations taken out of context or anything that distracts from the honesty.

Speeches to Inspire

Inspiration, To Inspire Animating action or influence What your speech can do A thing or person that inspires Who is effected by your speech, who effected you The act of inspiring; quality or state of being inspired The result of your speech

How to Inspire People Do Not Use Your Ego If you are good at something, you only need to tell them once. Do not boast. Understand Why Emotional Intelligence is Important Interpreting emotions consists of four parts: being self-aware, being socially aware, good self- management and relationship management. Stand Up for What You Believe People need to know where you stand on a given topic and where they stand with you.

How to Inspire People Do Not Bribe Them Make Them Feel Something Rewards just motivate people to get rewards. People will stop when the rewards go away. Make Them Feel Something Emotions will motivate people. Have you ever felt angry or afraid? Did they not motivate you? Form a Shared Belief Stories can unite people and motivate them towards a common goal. Look at history, when people are united great things can happen.
