People of the Civil War!

Abraham Lincoln An abolitionist from Illinois whose election was the final cause for secession and the Civil War. 16th President of the United States. Shot at Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes Booth on April 14th, 1865

Jefferson Davis President of the Confederate States of America At the end of the Civil War, he was arrested and imprisoned for two years but was released after his trial.

Robert E. Lee General of the Confederate Army. Turned down command of the Union Army to remain faithful to his home of Virginia.

Ulysses S. Grant General of the Union Army. He accepted Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia.

John Bell Hood Was promoted to brigadier general and given command of what became known as Hood’s Texas Brigade. The brigade fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. Fort Hood in Central Texas is named in honor of him.

John Reagan Appointed postmaster general of the Confederacy, then raided the US Post Office of its documents and southern personnel. At the end of the war, he was captured and spent two weeks in solitary confinement.

Francis Lubbock Following the Confederate secession in 1861, he was elected as governor of Texas. As governor he supported the Confederacy and worked to improve the military capabilities of Texas.

Thomas Green Elected as Colonel of the 5th Texas Cavalry. Led the forces on board the two Texas Cotton clads used in the Battle of Galveston. Considered as one of the finest cavalry leaders in the war.

John Magruder Colonel in the Confederate Army. Recaptured Galveston from Union troops in the Confederate Army. Put in charge of the Confederate Army in Texas and New Mexico.

Albert Sidney Johnston Civil War General who fought in the Texas Revolution and Mexican-American War. Killed at the battle of Shiloh.

Sam Houston Governor of Texas during secession and was removed and Lt. Governor Edward Clark replaced him. Strongly opposed secession and warned Texans that civil war would result in a Northern victory and the destruction of the South.

John Brown Attacked the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry on October 16th, 1859. After his execution, he became a martyr to those who opposed slavery.
