Work-based training/ apprenticeship The essence of public health training is that it is work-based Registrars are employed….. and will spend most of their time delivering services in health related organisations Registrars should take responsibility, make decisions and be integrated into the organisations in which they are based

Public health training pathway ST1 – ST5 refer to the years of training after entry into the training programme. Training is continuous across the five years. (indicative) Entry into specialty training for medical graduates is normally straight from Foundation. Medical graduates may also be able to apply for competitive entry from fixed term specialty training posts and from career posts. Successful applicants from these routes will be assessed on an ad personam basis for transferable competence but will be required to pass both parts of the MFPH before adjustment of the training pathway. If successful, entry will be considered to have been at ST2 or ST3 as appropriate. Entry into specialty training for other graduates requires a good (2:1 or above) first degree or a higher degree in a subject relevant to public health plus a minimum amount of related and relevant work experience. Individuals will be assessed for transferable competence. Other graduates apply for entry into specialty training through the same portal as medical applicants. There is no national quota applied to either group. Entry for an individual from either group with Part A MFPH will lead to a reduction in training time (usually 12 months). Entry from either group of someone who has completed an appropriate postgraduate degree in Public Health will lead to a reduction in training time provided the appropriate competencies in Phase 1 can be evidenced (usually 12 months). Most registrars undertake a course of formal academic study leading to Part A MFPH. The course may be taken over one or two years. Part A may be taken at any time during phase 1. Some registrars may apply successfully for time during phase 2 to undertake a PhD (outside the Walport initiative). Two years of this may count towards a CCT provided all core competencies are also met. Time out of training, for example to gain experience abroad, may be granted at the discretion of the local Dean. Experience abroad during training can be counted towards training provided that it is part of an approved programme, is supervised and has prospective GMC approval.

Academic work in public health training Specialist placements (6 month minimum) available in Phase 2 of training after Part B MFPH passed for any registrar May lead to grant applications etc Academic Clinical Fellow route also available to GMC registered applicants from start of training

Out of Programme (OOP) Out of programme for research (OOPR) Time out of training programme to experience a range of activities (OOPE) Out of programme for clinical training (OOPT) Out of programme for a career break (OOPC) Can apply to Faculty for recognition of OOP time towards CCT

Out of Programme - the rules Binary – either In or Out of training – cannot combine both No OOP until after Parts A&B MFPH passed HEE does not fund OOP activities The GMC does not recognise any training placements outside UK – all work abroad must be OOP

Academic clinical fellows Service and academic work done in blocks of time, not in days per week ACFs start training in a local authority – for August 2019, ACFs will be in a local authority within easy reach of central London– actual locations to be confirmed Find out about service public health work to avoid shock of working at a desk

Recruitment Academic clinical fellows (GMC registered only) – academic recruitment starts October 18 ACF recruits also have to apply through national general recruitment to be bench marked
