Learning Target: I can analyze sample responses for the ELA State Test. Do Now: Please get ready to take notes on creating effective sample responses!

open response questions What is ANSWER Key? A way to help you… • Understand what a question is asking • Identify main ideas while reading Decide between relevant and irrelevant details when reading Figure out the main ideas and details that answer the question. ANSWER Key Strategy is used to answer open response questions

What is ANSWER Key? A way to help you, continued… • Create an organized note plan Organize information from the notes into a clear, detailed and complete response. • Apply good sentence and paragraph writing skills ANSWER Key Strategy is used to answer open response questions

ANSWER Key A: Analyze the Question N: Note plan S: Skim, read and select W: Write the Response ER: End by Reviewing

A- Analyze the Question This means you have to find the “big idea” of what the question is asking you. Circle the question, and restate it in your own words. When you restate the question, it will be the topic sentence in your response.

N- Note Plan This means that you will create a 2-column note plan. This can also be called a T-Chart. On top of the 2-column note plan, you restate your “big idea.” Then, you write main idea 1, 2, 3, and details that support each main idea.

2-Column Note Plan Restate the "big” idea Main Idea 1 Detail 1   Main Idea 1 Detail 1 Main Idea 2 Detail 2 Main Idea 3 Detail 3

S- Skim, Read and Select This means that you reread the selection, and pick out the details that specifically answer the question. Be sure to answer what the question has asked. Sometimes you have to “think and search” and find the answer in several paragraphs. Remember to find the details that support the main idea that answers the questions right in the text!

ER- End by Reviewing This means to double check your work! Did you answer the question that was being asked completely, carefully, and provide supporting details for your response? Did you edit your work for proper spelling, capitalization, punctuation and sentence structure?

Reviewing the Rubric Together, we will take a look at the rubric for short responses. Then, we will look at some sample questions and determine the grade!

Extended Responses Now that you have seen some examples and the expectations of the short responses, lets look at some examples of the extended. We will start with analyzing the rubric, and then we will look carefully at sample responses and practice grading these samples!

Annotating/Breaking Down the Question According to “Can a Playground Be Too Safe?” and “Tear Down the Swing Sets,” what led to changes in playground design? What has research shown about these changes in playground design? Use details from both articles to support your response. In your response, be sure to • explain what led to changes in playground design • explain what research has shown about these changes • use details from both articles to support your response
