What is a Cold War? indirect conflict between superpowers (USA and USSR) domination of the world as superpowers vs.

Why are they in conflict? Communism vs. Capitalism Historic distrust Security Control

Yalta Conference, 1945 The physical structure of the Cold War was put into place at the end of World War II. Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin agreed in February of 1945 at Yalta to divide Germany into four occupation zones.

Iron Curtain symbolizes the ideological conflict between the US and Soviet Union speech given by British PM Winston Churchill in 1946 keep people in and information out

Truman Doctrine the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet sphere. Truman says: "I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way. I believe that our help should be primarily through economic and financial aid which is essential to economic stability and orderly political processes."

Marshall Plan US aid plan for Europe developed in 1947 rebuild European economies after WWII to prevent the spread of Communism named after American Secretary of States George Marshall

Spheres of Influence

Historic Relationship

Why is it an indirect conflict? power of nuclear weapons deterrence (disarmament) M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) - if attacked a nation would respond with the same or greater force - threat of using weapons against the enemy prevents the enemy from using their weapons - result would be complete annihilation

What does indirect conflict look like? Containment- Europe, Korea, Vietnam Arms Race Space Race Sports Proxy wars- Africa, Middle East, Latin America

Containment Containment was a United States policy using military, economic, and diplomatic strategies to stall the spread of communism, enhance America’s security and influence abroad, and prevent a "domino effect".

Domino Theory If one state turned communist, neighbouring countries were likely to turn communist as well used to justify American intervention and involvement in world affairs

Arms Race A competition between nations for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons, especially between the U.S. and the former USSR during the Cold War.

Space Race Between 1957 and 1975,the two nations focused on attaining firsts in space exploration, which were seen as necessary for national security and symbolic of technological and ideological superiority.

Sports The Olympics became symbolic of the competition between ideologies of the USSR and the USA US and USSR both boycott each others Olympics 1980 – Moscow 1984 – Los Angeles

Proxy Wars Greek Civil War, 1946–1949 Korean War, 1950–1953 Suez Crisis, 1956–1957 Cuban Revolution, 1953–1959 1959 Tibetan uprising, 1959–1973 Laotian Civil War, 1953–1975 Vietnam War, 1957–1975 Guatemalan Civil War, 1960–1996 Congo Crisis, 1960–1965 Bay of Pigs Invasion, 1961 Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962 Afghan-Soviet War, 1979–1989 Iran-Iraq war, 1980–1988 Invasion of Grenada, 1983 Nicaraguan Civil War, 1979–1990 Salvadoran Civil War, 1980–1992 When opposing nations use third parties as substitutes for fighting each other directly.
