The Earth’s Crust The Earth’s Interior Monday, November 12, 2018Monday, November 12, 2018

There are four layers in the Earth:

#1 Crust – the thin, outermost layer lies on top of the mantle it is 5 to 35 km thick.

#2 Mantle – made of rock material with the consistency of taffy so it is capable of flow. The temperature is 4000 degrees Celsius and it is 3555 km’s thick

#3 Outer Core – it is a liquid layer. It is 2270 km’s thick and the temperature is 5500 degrees Celsius

Play Video #4 Inner Core - a solid metallic sphere (iron and nickel) It is 2432 km’s thick and the temperature is 6000 degrees Celsius. Play Video

Bonus Question: How do the s-waves produced from explosives tell us what’s inside the volcano?
