Section 26 General Safety SB PG. XX

Section 26 General Safety Company Policy SB PG. 159 We’re going to review some guidelines on General Safety. These guidelines usually affect those working in service, repair, and maintenance. However, anyone working in construction or modernization needs to follow these guidelines when necessary. “When is the repair man going to arrive? We’ve been stuck here for hours!!”

Section 26 General Safety Company Policy SB PG. 159 All requirements presented in this section are in addition to all other requirements covered in previous sections of the safety manual. Remember that service and repair accepts the added responsibility of the riding public’s safety each and every day! Should this Elevator be shut off until repaired??

Section 26 General Safety Company Policy SB PG. 159 We have to notify building management when we arrive to perform maintenance or repairs. We shall place company approved “OUT OF SERVICE” signs at the landings before any work begins.

Section 26 General Safety Company Policy SB PG. 159 ? What other guidelines must be followed for General Safety under the company policy (Pause and allow participants to answer before continuing the presentation) Secure the equipment from the riding public while performing any work Ensure that no one is in the car, close the doors and prevent the doors from opening Do not wear tool belts or carry tools in pockets Communication devices shall be used with caution around controllers All work areas shall be kept clean Company approved waste containers shall be periodically and properly emptied

Section 26 General Safety Public Safety Procedures SB PG. 159 ? What is company policy concerning unsafe elevator equipment in the field (Pause and allow participants to answer before continuing the presentation) It is ThyssenKrupp Elevator’s policy to terminate the operation of any equipment that is not operating safely until repairs are completed.

Section 26 General Safety Dumbwaiters – General Safety Rules SB PG. 159 Now we’re going to talk about working safely with dumbwaiters. NEVER ride or stand on a dumbwaiter, unless: (????????) The rated load exceeds your weight, plus the weight of your tools The cab is structurally capable of holding your weight, plus the weight of your tools The conditions noted above must be met before you can access the car top, even if the car is secured as follows…

Section 26 General Safety Dumbwaiters – General Safety Rules SB PG. 159 Before riding or standing on top of a dumbwaiter, you must ensure the following safety precautions are in place: Ensure the dumbwaiter is equipped with a functioning top-of-car operating station Ensure the top-of-car emergency stop switch is operating properly Verify the dumbwaiter is equipped with safeties Always ride on top of the dumbwaiter, NEVER inside the car. Observe your overhead clearance

Section 26 General Safety Dumbwaiters – General Safety Rules SB PG. 159-160 If work must be performed on top of the car and ANY ONE of the four safety precautions listed in the previous slide aren’t present, other methods of securing the car shall be employed. Initiate the Lock-Out / Tag-Out procedure per the instructions found in Section 15 of the safety manual. (Pause to review Lock-Out / Tag-Out as it applies in this scenario with all participants before continuing the presentation) Secure the car from the overhead, or block the car from below in such a manner that the car will hold your weight, plus the weight of your tools.

Section 26 General Safety Dumbwaiters – General Safety Rules SB PG. 160 When working from the car top, be extremely careful that your body is within the confines of the car and clear of all hoistway protrusions while running Make sure all operating devices are inactive (push buttons, automatic leveling, homing circuits, etc.), except those under your immediate control. Check the turnbuckles on car and counterweight ropes to be sure they are double nutted and pinned. Wire rope has a tendency to twist when operating over sheaves and will spin nuts off turnbuckles, if they aren’t secured.

Section 26 General Safety SB PG. 160 What added safety procedure should be performed anytime you are unsure of the hazards before work is started??????? Perform a Risk Assessment - JHA !!!!!!!

Section 26 General Safety SB PG. 160 Review Questions - What is the first thing you should do when you arrive at a jobsite for maintenance or repair? Check in with building management!!! When performing maintenance and the need arises to use LOTO, which should be used a personal lock or a company lock? Personal lock. What are examples of unsafe conditions that would require TKE employees to shutdown an elevator? photo-eyes or safe edge not working No door open dwell time Mis-leveling Any condition that would compromise the safety of the riding public or elevator personnel. (see page 13 of TKE safety manual for other examples)

Section 26 General Safety SB PG. 160 Review Questions continued Under what circumstances is it permissible to ride inside a dumbwaiter? NEVER!! It is never a safe practice. When should a Job Hazard Analysis be completed? Anytime you are not sure all hazards have been abated.

Section 26 General Safety SB PG. 160 This concludes the training for Section 26, General safety. Remember, safety starts with YOU !!!! Are there any questions about anything that was covered?
