TALES OF THREE CITIES ASSIGNMENT 2A : JOURNAL AND DIARY NAME : KHOO CHEE MEI STUDENT ID : 0303125 TUTOR : DR. SUCHARITA SRIRANGAM

1. Marina Bay Sand Aesthetic view of Marina Bay which is built beside the sea attracts people’s eyeball. The activity held there was mostly entertainment therefore the built form was more interesting. The built form is contrast because of diversity in materials using also.

2. Orchard Road Busy and random artificial lightings in the city. There are no standard lightings and it brightens up the street, make it more lively. The form was random since the interior and exterior light scattered around in the city.

3. Orchard Road The crowded street that connects the people with building. This was a powerful space bonding between the people and buildings. The greenery landscape brings joyful to the people and make buildings lively. Movement pattern is linear because people go with the spaces and experience the joyful.

4. Orchard Road The eye-catching skyscrapers shows vertical movement pattern. But there is also some low rise buildings around them to bring out the harmony urban design. Contrast of low and high rise buildings of the city, contrast of organic and geometric form, and the rhythm of the city skyline was shown.

5. Marina Bay Traffic The interconnection of the traffic and spaces bounded around. Traffic and vehicle movement moves around the city for accessibility purpose. The movement of traffic is linear.

6. Marina Bay Sand Reflection Buildings need to compromise and blend with the landscape around to make the city beautiful. The reflection of water shows the blending of landscape with the buildings. The movement pattern is diffuse of buildings with the landscape.

7. Overview of Singapore City Appearance of the city and high nor low rise profile of the city creates a harmony city profile. A harmony city profile was created with diffusion of high and low rise buildings. The movement was random as the placement of high and low buildings was scattered in the city.

8. Infinity Pool of Marina Bay Sand Futuristic design of the building gives the city a new hope. The infinity pool writes a new page in Singapore City. The movement pattern was linear because the city development always goes linearly and gradually.

9. Overview of Singapore Island Different activities happening parallel in the city. The placement and arrangement of the activities brings out a real city profile. The activity was diffuse because different activities imposed in a city.

10. Orchard MRT Station City planning shall compromise with the user and makes the user feels comfortable. MRT station, bus service and taxi service are purposely built for users convenient. The function is linear because planning always goes linearly with the user.

SKETCHES:

1. Singapore Flyer Different elements that imposed inside the city makes the city stands out. Commercial, entertainment and attraction shall be imposed in a city to make the city brilliant. The movement pattern was random because placement of different elements in different region.

2. Esplanade Singapore A building or spaces that gather people together is the main issue of urban design. People communicates with spaces well brings out a city. The movement pattern was central because people gather in one spot.

3. Merlion A landmark in the city speaks a thousand words. It defines the city literary and gives out strong impression. The movement was central because it place at the main attraction of the city.

4. Gardens by The Bay Unique function and designs of structure do make the city stands out. Common materials and squary building design had made the city too dull, modern and sustainable design of Gardens by the Bay stands out. The function of this element is diffuse, diffuse unique function and design in a city.

5. Marina Barrage Embracement of spaces. The built form of Marina Barrage is contrast with the building around. There is contrast of enclosed space inside the Marina Barrage and the spaces arrangement around which is diffused. Therefore, Marina Barrage seems like a garden in the city.

OTHER CITIES: 1. Hong Kong 2. Manhattan, New York

1. Milan Street, Hong Kong The rhythm and tempo of the city was controlled by users. The street still seems lively even it’s already midnight. The movement pattern is diffuse because there are people in and out of the building, people walking across the road and vehicles passing through.

2. Ariel view of Hong Kong City The skyline of Hong Kong is attractive especially the night view. The adding of lights within the building diffuse with the landscape to form a nice night skyline view of Hong Kong city. The movement pattern was diffuse of building with landscape.

3. Victoria City, Hong Kong The city profile of Victoria City is always with high rise buildings to reduce land use. The buildings are commonly high and narrow. The movement pattern is uniform because Victoria City is surrounded by high rise building.

4. Manhattan City, New York The city profile of Manhattan city was quite uniform, which is always block by block. The buildings were built in a manner of centralization to create a high rise building city profile in Manhattan City. The movement pattern is centralize because all the high rise buildings are built in one spot.

5. Manhattan City, New York The complexity of movement pattern included traffic, pedestrian and building’s user form a busy urban city. City is always a busy place because people always gather in here to carry out their activities. The movement pattern is diffuse because various movements are happening in parallel.
