You know the Newbery Award… Given to the author of the most “distinguished contribution” to children’s literature in the United States each year

You’ve heard of the Caldecott… Given to the artist of the most “distinguished American picture book” each year

We’ve also read some Coretta Scott King Award winners… Given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values

What about the Sibert Medal?

The Sibert Medal Given every year since 2001 to BOTH the author and the illustrator of the “most distinguished informational book for children” published in America that year. Book must contain factual information written for children up to 14 years old. Folktales and fairy tales are NOT eligible. Each author and illustrator listed on the title page must by American. Robert Sibert was the long-time CEO of the Bound to Stay Bound book publishing company.
