Rio 2016 What did we learn?

Hollie Webb Belper Hockey Club

So, what was their journey…and what can we learn from this? At the 2004 Games in Athens, the Women’s Hockey team didn’t even qualify to go to the Olympics. At the 2008 Games they lost their first game 5-1 to Germany. They finished third in their group but didn’t get a medal. At the 2012 Games in London they won a bronze medal, defeating New Zealand. In the 2016 Games in Rio they became the first Women’s Hockey Team to win Gold…

What was the last thing you failed at? How did you feel? Failure… Failure is ok. It happens. It is not a bad thing In fact, when we fail, we learn the most. Failure is not the opposite of success, it is part of success. Sure, we don’t want to fail all the time – we just need to make sure that we learn from our mistakes… What was the last thing you failed at? How did you feel?

Adam Peaty – Olympic Gold Medallist From Uttoxeter (just up the road!)

So, what was his journey…and what can we learn from this? He trains 8 times a week at the City of Derby Swimming Club (+2 extra sessions at Loughborough University). He usually trains on his own with his coach. He gets up no later that 6am and swims for 2 hours in the pool before a normal day Doesn’t do all the normal things a 21 year old does, like go out with his friends or try other sports (in case he gets injured) When he was 14…he was scared of water and didn’t even like having a bath!

Two things to take away from this assembly… It’s ok to fail…just try to learn from it as best you can. Don’t let it defeat you and get you down. Just remember the Women’s Hockey Team and how they dealt with failure… Work hard and put in maximum effort (like Adam Peaty).
