Early life Clara was born in Oxford, Massachusetts Clara was born on Christmas day 1821 Parents names were Captain David Barton and Sarah Barton Homeschooled as a child. Did not go to college but went to a private boarding school Never married Her brother fell off the roof of barn and became sick. She cared for him for two years, and that made her want to be a nurse.
Contributions & Trivia Clara was the founder of the American red cross Clara earned the international red cross medal Did you know Clara was so shy one of her class mates asked her a question she fainted? Clara was a teacher and even opened her own school She first became nurse when she was eleven years old
Later in Life She retired as president of the Red Cross in 1904, and the age of 83 Death: April 12, 1912 in Glen Echo, Maryland She died at the age of 90 years old She died of tuberculosis
In Memory of her Over 38 locations are named in memory of her 19 schools 6 streets 13 other locations (Including Barton crater on the planet Venus!)
