GODWIN-Medieval Turmoil 3 strikes… Great Schism—3 Popes, people question the Church The Plague (aka: the Black Death) The 100 year’s war

THE GREAT SCHISM— King VS Pope Pope Boniface VIII told King Philip IV that even kings had to obey the Pope… …so King Philip put him in prison. He broke out but died a month later.

Avignon Pope Clement V moved the papacy from Rome to Avignon which weakened the papacy. Papacy moves back to Rome but chooses a “bad” pope, Pope Urban VI. Another pope elected, Pope Clement VII.

3 Popes? Each declares the other false, and excommunicates one another… “the Great Schism” Council of Constance: met to solve the problem of the 3 popes. (1 Pope = random) All 3 popes resign and Martin V is the new “real” pope, ending the Great Schism.

John Wycliffe An English professor who challenged papal authority by… Saying Jesus is the true head of the Church Clergy should have no land or wealth The Bible is the authority on Christian life

Jan Hus Said that the authority of the Bible is higher than the Pope. Invited to Council of Constance—seized and burnt at the stake.

The Black Death 1/3rd of population of Europe dies. People blamed the Jewish community. 3/4th of people who caught it died. Caused by fleas on rats

The Hundred Year’s War England vs France over who would inherit the throne of France. Joan of Arc: hears voices when she turns 13, telling her to fight the English. She leads them to victory-Charles VII crowned king. Eventually she is caught by English allies and taken to England where she is burned at the stake.

The end of the Middle Ages… …came with the end of the Age of Faith and the end of the Age of Chivalry.
