Learning Objective ACTION: Examine the Role of the First Sergeant CONDITIONS: Senior HR Leaders in a classroom environment working individually and as a member of a small group, using doctrinal and administrative publications, practical exercises, case studies, personal experience, handouts, and discussion with an awareness of the Operational Environment (OE) variables and actors. STANDARD: Analysis includes: 1. Leadership requirements model. 2. Characteristics and skills required to become a competent first sergeant. 3. Eligibility requirements for assignments to a first sergeant position. 4. Principle duties and responsibilities of the first sergeant. 5. Commander/first sergeant relationship.

What is an Army Leader? An Army Leader is anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people to accomplish organizational goals. Army Leaders motivate people both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization. Leadership is characterized by a complex mix of organizational, situational, and mission demands on a leader who applies personal qualities, abilities, and experiences to exert influence on the organization, its people, the situation, and the unfolding mission. Difficult and complex situations are the proving ground for leaders expected to make consistent timely, effective and just decisions. An Army leader is anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people to accomplish organizational goals. Doctrine does not provide a specific list of duties and responsibilities for the position. Because of this, each commander may develop a different concept of appropriate responsibilities and authority for his/her first sergeant. Likewise, each first sergeant may develop a different concept of his/her own responsibilities and authority. Courseware available online at the Army Training Network; you do not need to be currently enrolled or scheduled for the course to access the training material.
