Objective: Today 9/5 and 9/6 Current Events Lecture and Vocab Group Activity Formative Worksheet Exit Objective: You will be able to define the principles of government and give examples of its purpose

Chapter 1: Principles of Government Section 1: Government and the state

What is Government? The institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies Outlined in our constitution Democracy Indirect Direct Public Policy All the things a government decides to do Examples??? Education, well-fare, military, roads

Can you think of another type of government other than democracy? Dictatorship: The person in power doesn’t have to bend to the will of the people

What does “the State” mean? The state can be defined as a body of people, living in a defined territory, organized politically, and with the power to make and enforce law without the consent of any higher authority Examples?????? As you see they vary in size, power etc.

Each state has four characteristics Population The number doesn’t matter Territory It must have recognized boundaries Sovereignty It haws supreme and absolute power within its own territory Government Politically organized

Purposes of Government In groups make a visual representation for the following concepts: try to figure it out Form a more perfect union Establish justice Insure domestic tranquility Provide for the common defense Promote the general welfare Secure the blessings of liberty

Form a more perfect union As a country we are all linked together All people and states are as one We especially looked to the US Constitution to bind us under a common law and Union

Establish justice Justice is key to a functioning democracy Law must be reasonable, fair and impartial “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere” MLK Blindfold - Impartiality, Freedom from corruption of the senses Scales - Each side is to be carefully examined Sword - Power of law

Insure Domestic tranquility Keeping the peace at home is the prime function of the government We must have laws to keep from having anarchy Without governmental law and order

Provide for the common defense Defense is used in the Constitution more than any other function of government So much of what we think about with the government has to do with how we are being protected from foreign enemies

Promote the general welfare Government acts as a servant to its citizens To benefit all or most people Always take care of country and fellow citizens

Secure the blessings of liberty Liberty is guaranteed but not absolute We are free to do what we want as long as it doesn’t take away other people’s freedom. (rules)

Notecard vocabulary Sovereign State

Formative worksheet The following worksheet says Quiz but it isn’t one. You must use your book to answer The questions and concepts from the quiz may show up on the test whether we discussed them in class or not Use the time we have left to finish this worksheet (or do it at home) We will go over all of the worksheets before the quiz

Exit On a piece of paper answer the following question: Look at the list and tell me: Can we have one of these purposes without the others?
