What Are Number Talks? Instructional Routine 3-4 times a week for about 10 – 15 min – consistency is important Opportunity for students to mentally reason with numbers Students share their solutions and strategies and their solutions are recorded and honored Allows students to consider different perspectives on how a problem can be solved Opportunity for students to reflect on and compare their solutions with other students’ solutions. Anne Number talks are only one of a variety of instructional routines.

Why Number Talks for Grades K-2? Goal: Computational Fluency Accuracy, efficient & flexible strategies Numbers are composed of smaller numbers Numbers can be decomposed and combined with others to make new numbers What we know about one number can help us figure out other numbers Numbers can be organized into groups; ones, tens, etc.

Tips for Getting Started Build a community of learners & thinkers Use of Thinking Strategies is helpful! Teachers--Model your thinking through “Think Alouds” Create a safe environment for sharing successes & failures Mistakes are ALLOWED! Let students articulate their thinking out loud, celebrating misconceptions as opportunities for deeper understanding

Tips for Getting Started Classmates can help by sharing their thinking too Engage in discourse constantly throughout the day Provide lots of opportunities with the same types of problems Value their thinking

How to Implement Number Talks into Instruction Use numbers and strategies that go along with the domain you are teaching Teach/model the mental math strategies for that domain: bridge to 10, regrouping, repeated addition Extend the opportunity for strategies that have already been taught They need to be quick 5 to 10 minutes max. Changes Have I Seen in My Students Student discourse has become efficient. Arguments are supported with evidence. Students are using more strategies that had not been used consistently in the past. Application problems, or story problems, are spent focusing on steps to solve the problem, rather than the computation.
