Persuasive strategies

What strategies can you use to persuade someone to agree with you? Intro Video

ethical Appeals to our sense of RIGHT and WRONG Examples: E.L.F. Cosmetics are not tested on animals. Elect Abraham Lincoln, he cannot tell a lie! “Mom, if you let me stay up for an extra half-hour, I promise to get all my homework done and get up on time without complaining.” My invention will help keep the environment clean!

logical Appeals to our sense of LOGIC, and what MAKES SENSE. Examples: Buying bulk items at Sam’s Club cost less per item than buying them one at a time at the grocery store. You should not smoke. On average, someone who smokes a pack or more of cigarettes each day lives 7 years less than someone who never smoked. For a limited time, you can try Netflix for 50% off, making this the best time to sign up! My invention works better than the competitors’ products.

emotional Appeals to our EMOTIONS and our EMPATHY for others. Examples: For every pair of shoes bought, TOMS will donate money to a person in need. SPCA Advertisements: “For less than a dollar a day, you can help save an animal in need.” Vote Jane Smith for Senator. She cares about our jobs and our children! My invention will make peoples’ lives better.

My invention can help you stay healthy and active. fear Appeals to our COMMON FEARS (sickness, death, being left out) and promises to prevent them. Examples: Save a life. Don’t text and drive. Are you tired of being out of shape and unattractive? Join LA Fitness and get your body back! Oral-B: All-around protection for healthier, stronger teeth. My invention can help you stay healthy and active.

“bandwagon” Appeals to our desire to BELONG and be part of the “IN CROWD.” Examples: Everyone who’s anyone in basketball wears Air Jordans. American Eagle: “We the People live in AE jeans.” The drink everybody knows… Coca Cola. My invention is the coolest new thing. Everyone will want one!

“big name” (expert opinion) Appeals to our trust in EXPERTS, and our desire to be like CELEBRITIES. Examples: 9 out of 10 dentists recommend Crest toothpaste. Visa Signature: The official card of the Pittsburgh Steelers. “I’m LeBron James, and I won’t step on the court without my Nike Air Zooms.” My invention has been recommended by 8 out of 10 experts.
