Metaphors! A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things without using the terms “like or “as”. A metaphor implies that these two unlike things are the same. By stating that the objects are the same, the similarities become highlighted. Example: Francis is a pig. Pig like qualities: dirty, mud loving, messy, snotty, eats loud, slurps, has no manners, probably talks like a pirate and says rude things about cabbage, odiferous

Why are Metaphors the bee’s knees? A simile tells you what the similarities are, while a metaphor shows you. There is more power in showing versus telling. A simile implies the similarity is kind of sort of there. Sheila was hungry like an aggressive kangaroo. I am assuming that kangaroos get wicked hungry. A metaphor equates the two things being compared, thus turning Sheila into (figuratively) a kangaroo in more ways than just being hungry like one. Sheila is an aggressive kangaroo when she is hungry. This quality of hers caused her to devour two chocolate crumble cakes and stuff a few cookies in her pockets for later all while threatening to dropkick anyone who came too close.

Breaking a Metaphor Down A metaphor has two parts a Tenor and a Vehicle. The Tenor is the subject that the similarities are being applied to. In the example of “Francis is a pig”, Francis is the Tenor. The Vehicle is what the first subject is being compared to, or whose attributes are being borrowed. In this case “pig” is the Vehicle. Metaphors in Picture Form To understand metaphor in an image, you must have some understanding of symbolism. The colors of the burger in the image are a dirty brown/black, the burger appears dried out, shriveled, and in a stage of decomposition. The burger does not look like something we would like to eat. This could symbolize death, decay, unhealthiness. Clearly this is a McDonald’s burger. The metaphor is also fairly clear: Burger = decay The message is that what that burger looks like is what we are doing to our bodies every time we eat fast food. The burger is the Tenor and the decay is the Vehicle.

Wait, I thought this was about extended metaphors? An extended metaphor simply carries on the comparison through out the next few lines or in some cases through out a text.
