Extended Metaphor You are a rockstar. Make comparisons like one. Which one of these statements is an actual metaphor?

Simile - Metaphor What’s the difference? Simile: a figure of speech that makes a direct comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as”, implying that there are shared qualities or characteristics. Example: Books are like wormholes to other worlds and other lives. However, we are focusing on Metaphor. so.....

Metaphors! A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things without using the terms “like or “as”. A metaphor implies that these two unlike things are the same. By stating that the objects are the same, the similarities become highlighted. Example: Francis is a pig. Pig like qualities: dirty, mud loving, messy, snotty, eats loud, slurps, has no manners, probably talks like a pirate and says rude things about cabbage, odiferous

Why are Metaphors the bee’s knees? A simile tells you what the similarities are, while a metaphor shows you. There is more power in showing versus telling. A simile implies the similarity is kind of sort of there. Sheila was hungry like an aggressive kangaroo. I am assuming that kangaroos get wicked hungry. A metaphor equates the two things being compared, thus turning Sheila into (figuratively) a kangaroo in more ways than just being hungry like one. Sheila is an aggressive kangaroo when she is hungry. This quality of hers caused her to devour two chocolate crumble cakes and stuff a few cookies in her pockets for later all while threatening to dropkick anyone who came too close.

STOP! Write your own metaphor NOW! Take out a piece of paper, put your name on it, and write down an original metaphor from your noggin. 1, 2, 3, GO!

Breaking a Metaphor Down A metaphor has two parts a Tenor and a Vehicle. The Tenor is the subject that the similarities are being applied to. In the example of “Francis is a pig”, Francis is the Tenor. The Vehicle is what the first subject is being compared to, or whose attributes are being borrowed. In this case “pig” is the Vehicle. Test out your skills on the Sheila metaphor. “Sheila is an aggressive kangaroo when she is hungry.” aggressive kangaroo Tenor: Sheila Vehicle:

Metaphors in Multiple Modalities: Metaphors are not just meant for writing. Although Willie Shakes is the king of metaphors, and the metaphysical poets took theirs to a whole new level, metaphors pop up everywhere not just in literature and poetry. Metaphors in music: Yup, they are everywhere. Good luck finding a song that doesn’t use a metaphor. Songs YOU HAVE 1 MINUTE TO FIND A SONG THAT USES A METAPHOR! GO!

Metaphors in Picture Form To understand metaphor in an image, you must have some understanding of symbolism. The colors of the burger in the image are a dirty brown/black, the burger appears dried out, shriveled, and in a stage of decomposition. The burger does not look like something we would like to eat. This could symbolize death, decay, unhealthiness. Clearly this is a McDonald’s burger. The metaphor is also fairly clear: Burger = decay The message is that what that burger looks like is what we are doing to our bodies every time we eat fast food. The burger is the Tenor and the decay is the Vehicle.

Wait, I thought this was about extended metaphors? An extended metaphor simply carries on the comparison through out the next few lines or in some cases through out a text. Get out your headphones now or plan to listen quietly for the next task. Choose one of the following songs, click on it, and listen while reading the lyrics. Write down the title on the same paper as your original metaphor. When you are done listening to it write down the tenor, the vehicle, and a couple ways the metaphor was extended or continued throughout the song. Everlasting Light, by the Black Keys Love is a Battlefield, by Pat Benatar

"Everlasting Light" Click here for the song Let me be your everlasting light The sun when there is none I'm a shepherd for you And I'll guide you through (Shoo-shoo-shoo-wa) I'll hold and never scold In me you can confide When no one's by your side Oh baby, can't you see It's shinin' just for you Loneliness is over Dark days are through They're through (Shoo-shoo-shoo-shoo-shoo-shoo-shoo-wa) A train goin' 'way from pain Love is the coal That makes this train roll Yeah Ohh...

"Love Is A Battlefield" click here for song (We are young) (Heartache to heartache) Heartache to heartache (We stand) We stand (No promises) No promises (No demands) No demands (Love is a battlefield) Love is a battlefield Whoooo-oh-oh.... We are strong No one can tell us we're wrong Searching our hearts for so long Both of us knowing You're begging me to go Then making me stay Why do you hurt me so bad It would help me to know Do I stand in your way Or am I the best thing you've had Believe me I can't tell you why But I'm trapped by your love And I'm chained to your side Heartache to heartache we stand When I'm losing control Will you turn me away Or touch me deep inside And when all this gets old Will it still feel the same There's no way this will die But if we get much closer I could lose control And if your heart surrenders You'll need me to hold We are young Heartache to heartache we stand No promises No demands Love is a battlefield We are strong No one can tell us we're wrong Searching our hearts for so long Both of us knowing When I'm losing control Will you turn me away Or touch me deep inside And when all this gets old Will it still feel the same There's no way this will die But if we get much closer I could lose control And if your heart surrenders You'll need me to hold
