CSI: MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Medical Magnet Program at Andrew Hill High School Career pathway where students: Take linked courses, CTE courses and dual-enrollment classes Complete work-based learning opportunities Gain preparation for postsecondary and professional environments (with healthcare emphasis)

WHAT IS CSI? Career Summer Institute Collaborative partnership with Santa Clara County’s Mental Health Department Learning Collaborative, Andrew Hill High School Medical Magnet Program, Health Workforce Initiative hosted at Mission College, and 13 mental health agencies in Santa Clara Count to provide awareness about mental and behavioral health careers. One week Two days on campus Three days visiting various mental health care organizations Learning opportunity to gain more insight regarding mental and behavioral health Offers stipend $100 for students who attend

WHY I WANTED TO PARTICIPATE (BAOTRAM) Know people with mental illnesses Learn more about mental illnesses that people I know had and in general Wanted to know how to help them Bring Change to Mind Social worker inspired students to start a Bring Change 2 Mind club on campus Bring Change 2 Mind: Club that fights the stigma around mental illness Wanted to go to bring information back to the club · Bring Change to Mind’s High School Program gives teens a platform to share their voices and raise awareness around mental health. Our goal is to empower students to educate one another, and their communities, and to create a culture of peer support within their schools. Together, we’ll fight the stigma around mental illness.”

WHY I WANTED TO PARTICIPATE (DALILA) Personal connection: I have an aunt with schizophrenia Felt it was necessary to gain more knowledge to help her in the future Wanted to pursue career building opportunities over the summer To become more open to people with mental health

DAY #1 Learned about different mental illnesses Symptoms, treatments of mental illnesses How to take care of own mental health How to approach someone with a mental illness Run by Santa Clara County Mental Health Department

DAY #2 Hands on activities Role playing with how work with people suffering with mental illnesses How to approach and intervene when someone is in crisis using de-escalating Earned certification for Mental Health First Aid

DAY #3-#5 13 agencies participated in the Career Summer Institute Students visited agencies and did the following Activities including different mental health assessment tools Guest speaker presentations Tours Peer panel for Q&A Baotram: Walked around room and talked to mental healthcare Professionals about how to de-stress Meditation activity Dalila: Were very helpful in focusing on students and taking care of own mental health Normalized mental health

WHAT I GAINED (BAOTRAM) Met a lot of people who had a mental illness and learned about how they managed them Learned how I shouldn’t be scared of people who have mental illnesses Learned how to approach and communicate with people in a way that is professional and emphasizes de-escalate talking to someone who is having a mental health crisis Discovered ways in which I can manage and take care of my own mental health Don’t stand over them, tell them there is no one else in the room if they hear voices

WHAT I GAINED (DALILA) More comfortable with how to approach and provide support for my aunt More resources for mental health support and information Self-awareness of caring for own mental health Certification earned
