Connect: Discuss with the person next to you the problem below What came first? Challenge – how does this question link to today’s session?

Challenge – how does this question link to today’s session? It is a connection activity that offers: Curiosity A challenge of sort A thunk – a question with no real answer but generates discussion A link to your learning/session today Prepares the brain for learning It is something everyone can engage in at the beginning and get all connected Finally it links to planning a lesson (after you have already thought of who is in your class) what should come first? Setting learning objectives or planning learning activities? But unlike the question posed in the connection – there is a correct answer . The setting of learning objectives should always come first – then you select learning activities that match to the learning activity.

The thread of an outstanding lesson To know top tips, new ideas and strategies to set challenging learning objectives, match learning activities to objectives and measure student progress. To understand the process of setting challenging learning objectives, matching learning activities to objectives and using objectives to measure student progress. To be able to evaluate the process of planning and delivering an outstanding lesson. To evaluate your own practice and develop new strategies to plan and deliver outstanding lessons. 1 min

Activate – Posing a problem How can you make sure that in the brief time (usually 20 minutes) an inspector or an observer is in your classroom that your lesson ticks enough boxes to impress – and gains that ‘outstanding’ grade? Pair discussion using MWB make a list of top tips Roles: Scribe Communicator

Top tips for an outstanding lesson: Planning using student data and for their needs Setting challenging learning objectives ( plan with the most able in mind) Put the support in to ensure that the least able are able to meet the learning objectives Chunk learning Match learning activities to learning objectives Share and review learning objectives and success criteria - make sure students know what they are striving for, how to achieve it, where they are and how to move forward. Measure student progress against the learning objectives Plan for 65 minutes learning – 35 minutes assessing and measuring progress When ever being observed make sure you get students to review and reflect on what they have just learnt before the observer has walked in. Convincing /selling with passion the learning objectives (like a second-hand car sales man) Link to the bigger picture of learning – how it fits in with the student, the specification, pervious and future learning, other subjects

Demonstrate: Top tips for an outstanding lesson: In pairs - Now look at the statements and rank them in order of importance for planning and delivering an outstanding lesson. You can also add some of your own ideas from your discussion. Think of the following when making your decisions: Who does it benefit and how? What would happen if I did not do this? How can this make the difference between a lesson that requires improvement, a good lesson and an outstanding lesson? Justify your judgements Most important ...... Least important......

Process of planning and delivering outstanding lessons Who are my students? What do they need to learn? How are they going to learn the learning objectives? How do I sell the benefits of learning to students? How do I assess and measure student progress against learning objectives? How do I ensure all students are making outstanding progress? How do I use the progress made in today’s lesson to inform my planning of the next lesson? Match the statements to the questions to show the thread of an outstanding lesson. The thread of an outstanding lesson

The thread of an outstanding lesson

Review your own practice in the circle of truth Self assess yourself against the thread of an outstanding lesson 1 = I do not do this 5 = I do this all the time and it is very successful After finding your weakest area, review that area and find at least two strategies you could use to improve this area.

Consolidate - Post it note feedback 2 – New strategies that you are going to use to ensure outstanding learning 1 - Way this session could have be even better
