Key Phases for Syrian Refugee Movement to Regina Government Assisted Refugees Arrive at YQR Meet with Regina Open Door Society (RODS) RAP Staff & 1st Language Interpreters Travel to Reception Facilities (Reception House, Hotels, other) by Bus or Taxi -may be located throughout Regina Initial Welcome and Orientation – accommodations, emergency/safety information Food cash allowance (e.g. current system for kitchenettes) or cafeteria style (no access to kitchenettes) Government Assisted Refugees Arrive at Airport Phase 2: Initial Reception (6weeks) Primary Health Care Screening – Regina Community Clinic (RCC) - if sick transfer to local hospital Resettlement Assistance Program Services - Provincial Health Coverage and Interim Federal Health (IFH) activated immediately upon arrival - form filling – apply for Canada Child Tax Benefit, GST, Social Insurance Number, etc. and complete Statement of Income for taxes, Authorization forms - Finalization of Landing & Application for Permanent Residence - Open bank accounts and set up direct deposit - First language orientation – e.g. life in Regina, SK, Canada, housing, financial information… Secure Permanent Rental Housing - Basic household and furniture package provided Travel to Reception Facilities at Designated Military Bases Intro to Mental Health and Well-being – Initial Trauma screening - Regina Community Clinic (RCC) Referrals - Once housing has been obtained referrals to Newcomer Welcome Centre (NWC), Schools, Language & Employment assessments, ECD programs, etc. Phase 1: Pre - Arrival Phase Dental Screening (possibly) Initial Orientation and Assistance Children (birth – 5 years) School – Age (6 – 18 years) Adults (19 years and older) High – Needs Refugees Language assessments and referrals via NWC. Adults access Needs Assessments and Settlement Planning, Language classes and/or Continuing Education (young adults) Children/Families registered in ECD and ECE programs, KidsFirst Regina, Family Centres, etc. School orientation , language assessments, children/youth are registered in Schools via NWC. Families receive information and orientation to make informed school board choice (Catholic, French or Public) Ensure referral/linkage to appropriate supports and resources Case manage for 12-18 months post arrival to provide targeted supports Travel to YQR Phase 3: Settlement (6 weeks -18months) Settlement and Orientation – to SK, the local community , local resources, etc. Referral (where appropriate) to targeted programming. Adults/Families/Seniors matched with volunteer settlement mentors (as required) Accompaniments and Home Visits Referral (where appropriate) to targeted programming (e.g. youth ) Adults destined for the labour market – receive employment related assessments and services Case conference as appropriate with government institutions, health authorities…
