Remembrance For Peace R&KS1 Assembly

Reception and KS1 Assembly Remembering for peace Possible Further Activities Lesson on ‘Remembrance For Peace’ links: Differentiation: Assessment Resources needed : Powerpoint A picture of or a packet of Jelly Babies ‘There’s a boy just like me’ Frasier Cox either the book or you tube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHrAvC9uXxA Key words: Remembering Memories Peace Activities Timing Slides 2&3 Introduction: Show pictures of different types of sweets. Ask who likes which ones ? Remind children that sweets are a treat ! 2 minutes Slide 4 & 5 Show picture of ( or hold) a packet of Jelly Babies and explain that a hundred years ago these were known as ‘Peace babies’. Like most sweets everyone has a favourite flavour. Let’s see which one is favourite ? Did you know that they all have different names? Brilliant (red - strawberry), Bubbles (yellow - lemon), Baby Bonny (pink - raspberry), Boofuls (green - lime), Bigheart (purple - blackcurrant) and Bumper (orange). Slide 5 Explain Some people like sweets, some don’t , some like jelly babies some don’t , we are all different. But we are also similar. What are some of the things that we all have in common ? Either ask the children to discuss in a pair or ask for answers from some of the students Can you think of something that : Everyone likes – presents, food Everyone has – heart, feelings Everyone shares – air, water, Planet Earth… Everyone does not like – being hungry, getting hurt ( Adapted from an idea from www.teacher.net.gov.uk) 3-5 minutes Slide 6 Either read or watch ‘There’s a boy just like me’ Written by 9 year old Frasier Cox https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHrAvC9uXxA 3 minutes Slide 7 Explain that At this time of year lots of people think about and remember those who have died in War. This year is a special year as it is 100 years since the end of a big war , called World War 1 and we want to think about ways that we can enjoy the fact that we are all different and live together happily. Slide 8 How can we live together happily? Ask for suggestions. Ideas could include; to build friendships; get to know people, smile, listen, say no to bullying, help new people settle into school. Remind the children that we are never too young to get started to build peace, and to make a difference Slide 9 Prayer / Reflection AN ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTION WOULD BE TO USE THE SLIDES FOR THE TWO MINUTES SILENCE IF APPROPRIATE Dear God We want to remember all the people who have died during war. Thank you that we are all different, but that we share lots of things too. We also want to see wars stop, so help us to be peace builders, to be better friends, and to live happily and peacefully . Amen 1- 3 Minutes

Do you have a favourite sweet ?

Do you like jelly babies ? Which one is your favourite flavour ?

Do you know they have different names? Boofuls (green-lime) Bumper (orange) Bigheart (purple-blackcurrant) Brilliant (red-strawberry), Bubbles (yellow-lemon)

As Jelly Babies are similar but different, we are all similar but different too ! Can you think of something that : Everyone likes Everyone has Everyone shares Everyone does not like

There’s a boy just like me - Frasier Cox The winner of Book People's Bedtime Story Competition 2017, Frasier Cox's There's a Boy Just Like Me is a heart-warming tale of friendship between the author and a refugee who shares the same interests and childhood hopes and dreams.  In 2017, we asked children aged 5 to 11 to write a bedtime story between 200 and 800 words on the theme of friendship. The response was astounding and out of over 1,300 entries, Frasier's story was selected as the winner by a panel of judges that included TV favourite Claudia Winkleman and radio DJ and Radio Boy author Christian O'Connell. Frasier's story was chosen for his focus on important issues and beautiful storytelling.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHrAvC9uXxA

Sadly not everyone is friendly and sometimes people and countries fall out and fight, which can lead to war. You may have seen people wearing poppies. These are worn in November to remember people who have died in war. This year we are remembering that it is 100 years since the end of World War 1 and we are thinking about how we can live together happily and peacefully.

How can we all live together happily ?

Prayer Dear God Thank you that we are all unique, with lots of different things that we like to do. Thank you too that we can be friends with people who like the same things as us, and can be friends with people who like different things too. It makes us sad when people fight ,and today we want to remember all the people who have died or been affected by war. We want to see wars stop, so help us to be peace builders, to be better friends, and to live happily and peacefully. Amen
